Jun 30, 2012 - Espetata on the beach in Ribeira Brava

We had a BBQ on the beach with espetata and bolo de caco. Espetata is chunks of beef rubbed with rock salt and crushed bay leaf and then roasted over an open fire on a spit made out of a bay tree branch. More bay leaves are hrown on the fire to give the meat a bay smoke. Bolo de caco is a fresh raised bread dough formed into thick "pancakes" about 2 inches thick and then cooked on a griddle until done. It comes out perectly cooked ...... crusty on the outside and perfect on the inside. The loaves are sliced in half laterally and then fresh...

Jun 29, 2012 - Checked in to the hotel in Ribeira Brava

We took a taxi from Santa Clara to SFO, and flew out at ~6:00AM on 6/28/12, connecting in Newark, NJ and Lisbon, Portugal, arriving in FNC Funchal, Madeira on 6/29/12 at appx. 10:00AM local time. After picking up the rental van, and arriving at home to drop off luggage, it did not take long at all for jet lag to hit. Wiped us out for most of the day. While I was trying to sleep at mid-day, Festa do Sao Pedro was kicking into high gear just outside my window. (So much for requesting the "quiet" side of the hotel ... there isn't one.) Sky...
