Jan 16, 2010 - One week in!

Saturday 16th January – Day 7 Well Friday night was reasonable even though it was rocking and rolling around; I think we now have our sea legs so it’s not affecting us as much. After breakfast we went for three laps of the ship, boy was it blowing, however it made the following cappuccinos taste even better. Following that we decided to upload our trip journal details but could not get onto the satellite connection. Everybody else was the same, but eventually we got on, we uploaded the text and the pictures and then disaster struck.......

Jan 16, 2010 - Our 6th Day

Thursday evening and we have just left Madeira, still very overcast but very warm. After dinner we went to see the Irish comedian “Adrian Walsh” he was on for just under an hour and was brilliant. Got up this morning and do as I do every morning at home and made Liz a cup of tea, then proceeded to put on my wellies, which I could not find! to go out and clear the snow off the balcony, when I got out side I was hit with . . . wait for it... a nice warm breeze. It was a beautiful morning, nice calm sea not another ship in sight. Got the...

Jan 14, 2010 - Madeira

Well we had problems uploading yesterday and we think it was heavy traffic at this end; everybody seemed to be on computers. Apart from about 20 P & O computers lots of people have brought their own to do their own blogs and pick up e-mails. Well after having another superb meal last night we went to the Palladium to watch a show, singing and dancing routine, it was about 45 minutes long and it was brilliant. We were pleased that we got in early as it soon filled up (holds just over 800) and people were standing 2/3 deep at the back. The...

Jan 14, 2010 - Funchal, Madeira

Well, we pulled into the port of Funchal, Madeira in darkness this morning, with the rain pouring down. It did improve through the day, and it certainly wasn't cold. We had crew drills in the morning after a quiet clinic, but we went ashore afterwards. I have been here before, and so just enjoyed wandering around the old cobbled streets and through the very pretty gardens, as I didn't have much time. Funchal is a busy port for cruise ships - there were 2 ships in today, even in the middle of January; as you can imagine, it's used as a stop...

Dec 6, 2009 - Funchal

Funchal is the capital of the Madeira Islands, which have belonged to Portugal since 1976. The islands are volcanic and their climate is mild. The 150,000 residents here make their living from farming and tourism; most of the tourists are European since this spot is not on the radar of many Americans. We stopped here on a cruise a few years ago and had a very complete tour. We sipped Madeira wine and ate local cheese, took photographs of lush green valleys from cloud enshrouded mountain tops, and came down steep hills on wicker sleds. Since...

Mar 29, 2009 - Fun in Funchal

This morning I joined a tour that drove up into the mountains of Madiera. Coming down was the fun part. You sit down in a wicker basket while two guys push and (hopefully) steer you through the streets of Funchal. We got going quite fast and had dogs barking at us along the way. The rest of the tour seemed to focus on handicraft shops. Instead of going back to the ship I found my way to a regular shopping mall in search of benedryl. When I got back to the ship I had a call from the kennel. They were concerned Tara might have an abscess and...

Oct 1, 2007 - Madeira

Madeira is a beautiful island in the Atlantic Ocean. It's little but great! The water in the ocean is warm, the temperature is always between 19-24º celsius, and its volcanic nature is amazing. Visit and try to walk more than you drive, you'll have a great experience.

Apr 18, 2007 - Funchal, MADEIRA

April 18th We moored alongside the breakwater at Port Funchal at about 6am. Madeira is our last port of call before we return home. Most of the crew who have looked after us and shared our journey are also leaving in Southampton. It was almost inevitable our day therefore would be tinged with a little melancholy. We went ashore at about 9am to begin our last exploration. Madeira is the largest island in its namesake archipelago as well as one of the most beautiful. The marine approach and Funchal harbour provide a stunning picture as the...

May 8, 2006 - Funchal, Portugal

We have arrived at our next stop, Funchal (Madeira), Portugal. The island of Madeira is located in the Atlantic Ocean about 370 miles off the coast of Morocco. For over 100 years tourists have enjoyed its rugged volcanic peaks, beautiful tropical coastline and a climate that's never too hot or cold. Madeira lace and Madeira wine are both still produced here in the Old World tradition. We decided to take the "Explore Monte" tour. We walked a short walk from the cruise terminal to the Madeira story center where we learned about the history of...
