Oct 28, 2015 - To the westernmost town on the European mainlands

A late start today to enable people to have a look around Obidos meant that we rolled out at 11:30. At least the rain had cleared although there was a light overcast which looked set to stay for the day. The prediction was for 18 degrees and less than 5% chance of rain but a steady southwesterly wind which would mean a headwind most of the day. Just out of Obidos we rode through some kinds of fruit orchards. I first thought that these were vineyards due to the stunted plants but Maree realised that they were heavily pruned fruit...

Dec 31, 2013 - Peniche and around

The day started wet and miserable so the morning was spent doing domestics. Just after lunch the rain stopped and there was a glint of sunshine so we took the opportunity to head south to Peniche. The town is a major fishing port but had an unusual the rugged coast line just west of the town at the Cabo Carvoeiro peninsula. The waves crashed against the rocks and the rocks themselves in some places looked as if they were going to splinter into many pieces. The town itself was of no great beauty but it did have the 16th Fortaleza. This was...

Nov 8, 2010 - A place like home

Another day in paradise thanks to the Geekco Lodge. The sign out front says, “A place like home,” and they really hit the nail on the head. I woke up, made some eggs and despite the fact that the surf was being ravaged by sh*t weather, I felt perfectly happy with the start of my day. I can’t be sure but I am pretty sure that all I did for the rest of the day was eat, sit around, play guitar and watch TV. Tough life. The highlight of it all was the lovely dinner that Ashley and I prepared. It went a little something like this. . . While the...

Nov 7, 2010 - Old school

A likeminded Australian surfer who you’ve known for 6 hours, an authentic home cooked Portuguese dinner, a late bottled vintage port, a guitar, cable TV with American shows, and a full container of caramel ice cream – sounds like the ingredients for a night to remember to me. And it was. How did I get there? Well it’s really quite simple. The day’s destination was once again Peniche, but before I headed out on the 12:30pm bus I had to get my tourism fix so I headed down to a place called Belem. I hopped the zippy 15E tram and battled with...

Nov 4, 2010 - Patience, grasshopper

Star date, captain’s log: The time. . . . 9:29pm. My mental state. . . compromised. Tonight for dinner the hostel provided an authentic Portuguese meal consisting of a seriously spicy chicken recipe and maximum strength sangria. The latter is taking its affect right now so bear with me. And now, today’s entry! A tremendous surf report got me out of bed early this morning and by 8:40am, I had eaten my fill of cereal, eggs, and toast and was on my way to the bus station. I had just missed the 8:30 bus to Peniche (pronounced Pen-eesh, not...

Jun 13, 2009 - Peniche Surf Camp

Peniche surf camp was in a great location, only a one minute walk from the beach . We arrived in Peniche on Sunday afternoon and started our surf lessons the next morning. We decided to only take 3 days lessons after all and thought we would add more later if we still wanted more. The surf camp was intense, three days proved to be enough. On our 1st day of surf camp the waves were huge! I was getting whipped around like a rag doll and have to admit some of the time when I would catch a wave in I was a little scared to head back out through...

Jul 19, 2008 - What Luck! Renaissance Fair in Obidos

July 19 2008 Up in the morning at our residencial, and once again it seems that we are the only ones at breakfast. We quickly polish off our plates and empty our glasses, because this is a big day. We have placed three different cities on our itinerary: Batalha, Alcobaca, and Obidos. I have calculated around a 1 hour drive from city to city. However, we first must complete our main site in Coimbra, Velha Universidade. The old university is a quick drive through the town, making several rights and lefts to get us to the top of the hill. We...
