Feb 19, 2017 - A Day of Rest

Today was another rest day. We read and did puzzles most of the day. I did more work on the newsletter and Christine proofread it. In the afternoon we checked the car which had warned there was a problem with the centre brake light and sure enough, it was not lighting. On calling the rental company they said they would make a note of it, but not to worry as it was not a mandatory light, as long as the other two were working, which they were. We went to the grocery store and stocked up with the items we needed. At night we watched a...

Feb 18, 2017 - Exploring Albufeira

After breakfast we made up some sandwiches and set off to Albufeira. We returned to the part of the old town which we had visited briefly on our last visit and explored it more thoroughly. We went up to the Museum of Sacred Art housed in the old Church of St Sebastian and viewed the exhibits for a while, then walked further up the hill to the Church of St Marita. It was closed, but one was able to walk round it. It is quite remarkable the way these old buildings are almost submerged in the housing and commercial developments that almost...

Feb 17, 2017 - Friends Visit

We were up sharply this morning and had breakfast and we tidied up then read for a while and I did some of the Church newsletter. Sandy & Fiona, our friends from Calgary, came in and we talked and showed them round the apartment then we walked down to the restaurant where we had our meal on the first night here and had lunch. We then walked down to the beach which was considerably more busy than when we first visited it two weeks ago. It was also a lot warmer as the sun was out and it was warm enough for a couple of youngsters to dip a toe...

Feb 16, 2017 - Faro

We woke to a nice bright day today; a little haze, but sunshine. We had breakfast and set off to Faro. For the first time in Portugal we ran into a traffic jam. It was caused by roadworks and the traffic, we discovered, was being controlled by a policeman at a traffic circle. From where he was standing he could have no way of knowing which line of traffic was the longest. Ours apparently had the lowest priority as traffic kept coming towards us and ours moved infrequently, but the tail got longer and longer. Eventually we passed the...

Feb 15, 2017 - Rest & Recovery

Another non-eventful day. After last nights lack, when we eventually got to sleep after 5am we slept till after 10am. We had a light breakfast and read and did puzzles till mid afternoon when we walked down to the grocery store to get a few things. Christine prepared dinner and after dinner we played a couple of games. I feel much better and hope we can resume our sightseeing tomorrow.

Feb 14, 2017 - Delicious meal with unintended consequences

Today was much brighter, but with threatening clouds on the horizon and obvious signs of overnight rain. Christine did laundry and I did some of the Church Newsletter. Later in the day we went out for dinner. We walked down to a restaurant only to discover they did not start serving till 6:30 pm. We elected to wait while they served us champagne in honour of Valentine's Day. We ordered and right on 6:30 our meals appeared. A couple came in and sat beside us and questioned the 6:30 opening as they had reserved a table and been told to come...

Feb 13, 2017 - Loule at Last!

Well, what a difference a day makes! It was dry and bright, though not too sunny when we woke. We had a leisurely breakfast and read for a while, had lunch and set off again for Loulé. It was quite a different drive as the sun came out and shone all the way. We were apprehensive that we might not get parked where we did yesterday, with it being a working day. We were fortunate to get in at the end of the row. We crossed the street and went into the market. Many of the stalls were closing, but it was interesting to see the old Moorish-style...

Feb 12, 2017 - A Run in the Rain

The morning was dry, but cool and obvious signs of heavy rain overnight. We had a quiet morning, anticipating the afternoon being ab improvement. After lunch we set off for Loulé, an inland town with some interesting features. We had just left the apartment when we saw raindrops on the windshield. We continued on and so did the rain. By the time we reached Loulé it was a downpour. We parked across from the market which is an old, Moorish style building. After some debate about our intentions, I quickly jumped out of the car and took a photo...

Feb 12, 2017 - The Rain did not stay in Spain!

We had the laziest day yet on our trip. The weather was awful. We woke to rain beating on the windows and the wind howling. We could scarcely see the sea, but we could see the lighthouse shining its beam in a constant flash all day. We have never seen it on in daylight before, but it shone its warning all day today. At dinnertime there was a quick glimpse of a small patch of blue sky, but it quickly gave way to grey clouds and more rain beating down. We read and did puzzles. At night we played a couple of games and won one each. It is on...

Feb 10, 2017 - Old Friends meet in Albufeira

We woke to brilliant sunshine which gave way to clouds, then rain. We had breakfast and got ready and left for Albufeira where we had arranged to meet our friends, Sandy and Fiona, from Calgary who are staying some way beyond that town. We drew into the parking lot where we had agreed to meet and they approached us as we parked. We walked down through the old town to the waterfront which we had previously visited and went into a restaurant for lunch. We caught up on each other's news and exchanged stories about our travels on this trip. We...

Feb 9, 2017 - At Home

A quiet day. We had received some information regarding plans for our Church back in Edmonton and we spent some time trying to access it. The WiFi here works, but is not very robust and we had some difficulty getting what we wanted. We got enough to understand the gist of it and were able to respond as requested. We then read and did puzzles then had lunch. We went to get gas for the car and as we were leaving we realized the promised chairs were at the door. We drove to a gas station and filled up the car at about twice the price we left...

Feb 8, 2017 - Lagos Revisited

We rose to the return of bright sunshine this morning. We had breakfast and set off to revive our memories of our 2012 visit to Lagos. It was about an hour's drive west of where we are staying and the longest we have driven since we arrived. The freeways are really good and quiet, the traffic possibly reduced due to the tolls, we will get the bill eventually when we turn the car in, but the sections we drove today varied from 35 cents to 80 cents. It possibly amounted to 3 or 4 Euros which is not bad considering the quality of the surface...
