Mar 3, 2017 - Home Again

We were up sharply, had breakfast and stowed the last of our things in the carryons and Nan took us through to Glasgow. It was a misty morning and we seemed to run in and out of it all the way to the airport. It was still cool - after Portugal, really cold! Nan parked the car and we went into the airport and checked in. We said our goodbyes and Nan headed home while we went to the lounge to have a seat and a bite to eat. While there, Christine got into conversation with another couple who came from a small town close to where we had lived...

Mar 2, 2017 - Misdirections on the way Home

Well, the time has come! We did the rest of the packing and had breakfast. I was taking the last of the garbage out when I met the manager coming in. She went on up to the apartment and I was going to dispose of the trash when I heard a voice calling. Here was a couple who were obviously lost. Their English was limited, but they wanted assurance that they were in Olhos d'Agua. I assured them they were, but they wanted directions. I thought they were looking for an hotel, but no, they had come from their hotel and he showed me on the map (It...

Mar 1, 2017 - Packing and Goodbye to the Ocean

All good things must come to an end and today is our last full day here. We had breakfast and spent the morning packing. After lunch we drove into Albufeira for one last look. We stopped at an overlook which we had not been to previously and admired the beach and the view. We drove through back streets to the parking area which we have used before and walked through the tunnel to the beach cafe we were at a few days ago. It was a bright, sunny day and quite warm, but the air was cool when you felt the breeze. We sat and enjoyed a coffee and...

Feb 28, 2017 - Salema and Lagos

Last Day of February and our last day for extensive sightseeing. We had breakfast, packed some sandwiches and set off westward towards Lagos. We had decided between an apartment at a golf course near Lagos and the place we are staying at. Out of curiosity we wanted to see what the other place was like. We sped along the freeway and turned off towards the address. Unfortunately the roads have been improved since the maps were introduced to the GPS and we took a wrong turn. We have found this true quite frequently in these parts where you...

Feb 27, 2017 - Relaxing in Albufeira

Another relaxing day. We had a leisurely breakfast and I finished sorting out yesterday's photos - there were a lot of them! - and updated the journal. Christine did laundry. We had lunch then drove into Albufeira to get a few things for gifts. We walked down through the tunnel and settled into comfortable seats at a restaurant there and enjoyed a coffee while watching fellow diners, distant sailboats and the sea while a cat snoozed in the sun beneath a plant. We walked back to the car and drove home, diverting slightly to see if we could...

Feb 26, 2017 - CARNAVAL!!!

We had breakfast and got ready for Maria & Paulo coming. Maria came up and we went down to meet Paulo in their car. We drove out to Loulé where the Carnaval Parade is being held. They had one yesterday and will have the final one on Tuesday. Carnaval seems to me an odd celebration. It seems to be a time of excess to make up for the deprivations of Lent, which seems contrary to the whole purpose of Lent. Maria explained it as their substitute for Halloween and the schools promote it like we do Halloween. Certainly there were a lot of...

Feb 25, 2017 - Portuguese Friendship Renewed

We were up and had breakfast, anticipating a call from Maria & Paulo, Fiona's friends from Porto. They were travelling down from Lisbon today and called to say they were just leaving Lisbon. We read and wrote and did puzzles. Later they called to say they had arrived and they came later in the afternoon. We sat and talked for quite a while, catching up on each others' news. We went for a walk down to the beach and Maria had to put her hand in the sea. It seemed she really liked this area. We walked back up the hill and stopped at a...

Feb 24, 2017 - Canadian Friends at Carvoeiro

We had breakfast this morning then set off in search of a car wash. Although there had been more dust during the night, there was not an appreciable additional accumulation on the car, so we decided to remove the layer of fine sand that was on it. We went to one which was not too far away and lined up with half a dozen other cars, all intent on the same purpose. The wash was slow, but thorough. A man sprayed the car with a pre soak wash and rinsed it off, then the car was driven through brushes and a dryer and finally another man hand dried...

Feb 23, 2017 - African Dust, UK Snow & Beaches

When we got up this morning, the sun was shining through a cloudy haze and looked like the moon. We had a relaxing morning, reading and doing puzzles. After lunch we went down to the car. Yesterday it had a light reddish dust on it. Today it was covered in a good coat of the dust. It turned out that Africa had come to us. The air yesterday and today had been hazy, and we assumed it was a mist, but in fact the wind is bringing dust from the Sahara all across Portugal and it coats everything. There is a warning out for people with respiratory...

Feb 22, 2017 - Silves

After breakfast we set off for Silves, a town that once was the capital of the Moorish occupation of this area. As a result it has a large castle which was besieged by the Christian armies retaking the area for Christendom. The castle still stands and is an interesting building, with a complete wall and several of the towers still standing. Much of the interior has fallen, due to weather, earthquakes and invaders. A cistern that once held 1,300,000 litres of water can still be observed, but now houses an exhibit about the Iberian Lynx. Very...

Feb 21, 2017 - Around Town

We had a lazy start to the day. I got the newsletter off to the Church for review and we read and had lunch. We then went exploring the roads close by and saw some of the resorts around Olhos d'Agua. We ended up at the beach where we had a cup of coffee and watched the world go by, or at least that portion that resides, however temporarily, here! We had our obligatory stop at the grocery store and replenished our larder then returned home and had dinner. I made a few changes to the newsletter and got it ready for printing. We finished the...

Feb 20, 2017 - Portimao & Alvor

We had breakfast and set of westward to Portimao On the way, Christine spotted a tree full of almond blossom. It was convenient to stop, unlike most places where we had seen it, so she managed to get a photo of it. We continued on to the motorway which allows for fast approaches to many of the nearby towns and villages. With speeds of 120 KPM you cover the ground quickly. The tolls do not appear too expensive, but no doubt we will find out when we get the bill. It was a dull day, but dry and not too cold, though the wind kept us with our...
