Apr 18, 2010 - Coimbra, Portugal

It was hard where to go next on our way to Porto, so with a toss of the coin, it was Coimbra (pronounced Queembra). A great little college town halfway to Porto, right on some river we never quite figured out the name of. And the university was founded in 1197, and the town was clearly there before the university, so it's an old place, by american standards. Our first introduction to the town, since we had no map, no idea where town center was, was to have a taxi driver take us to what we thought was the location of the tourist office. When...

Jul 18, 2008 - Coimbraga and Coimbra

July 18, 2008 Well, this morning we got up and finished stuffing our bags before we went to breakfast. After breakfast we dashed out to the information office to get directions out of the city and onto the right road to get us to Coimbra. We went back to the residencial to pick up our bags, and then off to the parking garage to collect our car. Getting out of the city was no problem, a much different experience than coming in. I think it best not to enter a city during morning or evening rush hour. I have now learned my lesson. The drive to...

May 2, 2008 - Coimbra

I spent today sightseeing and wandering aimlessly. Before heading downtown, I stopped at the theatre and managed to get a ticket for the Heavy Trash gig tonight for 14 Euros (another accomplishment using my Portuguese!). I toured the Biblioteca Joanina, which is a remarkable library on campus. Only 25 people are allowed in at a time, and you are not allowed to take any pictures. The tour was in Portuguese, so I didn't understand very much, but it was so amazing that I didn't mind, and they did have an English language handout with a little...

May 1, 2008 - Coimbra

Today was a holiday here, so I had to wait at the train station for my Intercity medium speed train, and got a rear facing seat again. Ugh. The train stopped at Coimbra B, which is pretty distant from the city center. After paying 50 cents to use the washroom, and running across the tracks to leave the station, I took a taxi to my hostel, the Grande Hostel de Coimbra. It was three flights up off the street to the house. The house very nice with a garden, a lemon tree, and lots of amenities. I dropped off my stuff, and headed out for a walk....

Sep 29, 2007 - Coimbra (and Bussaco)

It's sad to be leaving Lisbon but it feels great to be on the road again. Taking the train north from Lisbon turns out to be really easy because I can catch it at Entrecampos station, about 300 m from the hotel !!! And it is FAST !!!!! I clocked the fastest speed at 222km/hr courtesy of the helpful readout for types like me who like to know the detail...inside temperature, outside temperature (you get the gist). In another heart-winning gesture, at the train station in Coimbra I am befriended by a businessman who saw ny baggage tag with...

Nov 22, 2005 - Coimbra

I arrived in Coimbra yesterday afternoon after a beatiful train ride through the Portugese countryside, passing through little towns, farms and vineyards. Sorry, but for some reason, I am still having problems uploading pictures directly from my camera, so now new pics yet. I continually get messages saying that the computer doesn't recognize the hardware. My camera is only 3 years old, so hard to believe that it won't work, but it has only worked once, in San Sebastian and not since. The weather has been great here, a little warmer than...

We arrived back at the coach early and started our trip to Coimbra Portugal. The rest of today is driving. I am writing this as we drive on the highway using my palm and keyboard. It is a little awkward balancing it on my legs, but it will keep me occupied and prevent me from having to do it when we get in tonight. I am going to put together an email reply to Noel and Katie and a longer email to Ben and Carol that I hope I will be able to send tonight when we arrive in Portugal. The ride from Salamanca featured two breaks and one nap on...
