Oct 28, 2005 - Malaysia Borneo - Sipadan Island

The day started very early, a 4am pickup from our hostel to the airport, where we boarded our plane to Tawau, and from there a shuttle bus to Semporna arriving at the waterfront at 8:30am in time for the boat ride over to Mabul Island, which would be our home for the next few days. The dive resort was located on Mabul Island rather than Sipadan, where we had come to dive, as Sipadans resorts have all been closed down by the government as a way of minimizing the damage done to their valuable coral reef. Dec 16, 2004 - Camp fires

Our first day diving was at Sibuan which is about 4 miles from the Phillipine border. It is a beautiful, tiny island fringed by the most amazing coral reef and no permanent inhabitants. There is a small community of Sea Gypsies living there at the moment, they have no posessions and live off the sea! There is also an army base on the island to combat the threat of pirates and poachers who are a big problem for the Malaysian government and roam the waters between Malaysia and the Phillipines.
