Feb 27, 2012 - Siquijor

On Thursday night, after an uneventful ferry ride in the dark, I arrived on my third island: Siquijor. This island somehow felt more remote than the others, since it doesn't have an airport. I was picked up at the ferry port for the 20-minute ride to my guesthouse: Charisma Resort. Even though it was dark, I could see how low-key and rural the island was. I thought the driver was going a little fast, squeezing pedestrians, bicylcles and motorized tricycles to the sides of the barely lit narrow road. From the time I arrived at Charisma...

Feb 6, 2010 - Siquijor

It was a little bit of an ordeal to get to Siquijor, our first ferry decided to turn back half way through its journey due to high seas however we were lucky as a larger ferry was due to set out so on we got and arrived at midnight, not a good time to try to find a room!! We were lucky though, we ended up at the Swiss Stars guesthouse whose huge room was a real find. Next day we hired a brand new chinese motorbike with a loose chain, a fact we didn't discover till we were well out of town - lesson learnt! We did a circumference of the...

Where's Malcolm?

Sep 19, 2009 - The island of magic

Bored of haggling with tricycle drivers, decide to hire a motorbike for the day to explore a bit of Siquijor, an island believed by Filipinos to be the abode of witches. After a bit of a nervy start, soon get the hang of the very simple gears (just tap up or down and no clutch) and in no time I'm bombing round like a pro. See a turn off down a dirt track to a monastery (though it turns out to be a nunnery) and getting there, with it's concrete walls and aura of silence, it didn't look like it welcomed visitors. I want to go in but I'm not...

Travels of a Kinnie

Sep 18, 2009 - Siquijor

Left Sugar Beach by boat, sad to go though not with the leaden feet of last time; it's easier to go with the finality of a 'never mind' and as opposed to the uncertainty of a 'what if'. The last thing I saw was Dina alone on the beach waving goodbye, and I was touched that her friendliness and openness hadn't changed now she had a serious boyfriend, it tells me that it's unconditional and genuine. Three buses, one tricycle and seven hours later, turn up at Harold's Mansion, that rare thing in SE Asia, a genuine backpackers hostel, and grab...

Travels of a Kinnie

Jan 28, 2007 - Siquijor Island

Travelled from Bohol to Siquijor Island via Dumaguete (Jan 28th to Feb 1st) Siquijor Island is a tropical jungle paradise known for its abundant fireflies and an aura of mystery and magic as its mountain interior is home to a bunch of "Mangkukulam" (healers) who practice with herbs and oils instead of cards, tea leaves and bone bits. We are now healed. We spent a few days exploring the small island on a motor bike, checking out the coastal towns and beaches, driving thru the interior up to Mount Bandila - and exploring the nature reserve...

Dec 25, 2006 - Panglao

Dutchie on the move

Dec 11, 2005 - Bohol naar Sipalay

Hallo vrienden !
