We get an early start to head to Sohoton Cave for the VFV sponsored volunteer excursion. It begins with a 1.5 hours Jeepney ride to the neighboring island of Samar. Once there and after our 200 peso entrance fee (only 20 pesos for locals, not fair!) we travel down the river past banana boats and riverfront villages. Catbalogan, Samar Any mention of the island of Samar is usually preceded by the word “rugged”. Basically the minute you step foot in Samar you’re considered off-the-beaten track, although the National Hwy does run down the island’s Western flank, sprinkling the trappings of civilization here and there (tricycles, Jollibee, Rizal statues*, noise pollution, Mercury Drugstores, prostitution … ).
