Feb 24, 2014 - Working our way back home

Barb and I took a motorized tricycle to Sabang - a nearby town to Puerto Gelera. We had heard that there was more of a "girlie bar" scene there, but that the town was nice. The local architecture was nice - lots of colorful buildings with a Spanish or Italian influence. However, there was definitely a fair amount of what I call the "Ick" factor. Today we have commenced the journey back home. We left sunny Puerto Galera and had a mercifully smooth passage back to Luzon, then by bus to Manila. Tomorrow morning we head off to the airport. Of...

Feb 22, 2014 - Pt Galera2

Last night a group of Israelis from a nearby hotel had a celebration on the beach below our hotel. The vodka was flowing freely and the food tables were groaning. I think there as enough for an extra 300 guests. We got to watch a fire dance as part of the entertainment and it was interesting. Set to some hard driving recent music; not traditional at all. I felt faintly voyeuristic. Today Barb and I proved yet again that we can get lost finding out way out of a paper bag. we got dropped off near town and promptly proceeded to walk several...

Aug 23, 2012 - Puerto Galera Trip

Its more fun in the Philippines, I have proven this when we conducted an educational tour in Puerto Galera, one of the most visited tourist spot in Oriental Mindoro. Puerto Galera is only four and a half hours away from Manila. First by bus to the Port of Batangas City then by boat. While we were riding on the boat, we’ve seen dolphins and behind the beaches are the huge and unexplored mountains. One of those has a face image of Mary on top. When we arrived in Oriental Mindoro, our group checked-in at Oceana Beach Resort, considered as one...

Dec 17, 2010 - Out in the woods....

Or in the city It's all the same to me When I'm drivin' free, the world's my home When I'm mobile.... Lots of traveling since I last checked in and all of it has been memorable. The Philippines is made up of over 7,000+ islands and nothing is easy to get to. So goin' mobile is exactly what we did. Roger and I met up with our friends David and Mary at the Mall of Asia, yes I was in another mall (the largest in the world), to start our adventure. After picking up a few necessities we hit the road. It was nice to leave the hustle and...

Apr 12, 2009 - Travel in the Philippines, Part 1

Traveling by public transport in the Philippines is an exercise in uncertainty. Bus and boat schedules are notoriously loose. Delays are predictably common. If a bus isn’t delayed, it’s just as likely to leave early. And finding somebody who actually knows the schedule as opposed to somebody who ‘maybe’ knows the schedule is a guessing game. Whom do you trust? Experience gives you scant advantage. The only truly effective antidote is patience. Patience is great if you’re backpacking around the world for several months growing dreadlocks....

Nov 24, 2008 - Puerto Galera - A cousin getaway

by Lora We headed off for a short cousin getaway with Ichie to Puerto Galera, a beach resort area in Mindoro. Ichie called it "the common person's Boracay," which is a really nice, high end touristy beach area in the Philippines. We had a great time swimming, stargazing, and chatting on our brief excursion. One of the best parts of the trip was the hour long boat ride to Puerto Galera from Batangas! Thanks cousin for spending time with us!!! We had a blast and we miss you already!

Feb 14, 2008 - Happy Valentines Day!

We had a LONG sleep to help catch us up from the missing hours the prior night. We showered and packed up, walked a couple blocks in the direction of the hotel that the bus was departing from and jumped on a jeepney as our estimated timing for walking was a little off. We checked in and boarded the bus with the rest of the white population of Manila lol. The only thing that was a little odd was it was Amandine and I, maybe two couples in their 50’s, then white men (40-60) with Filipino women. A trend I was fascinated by and that was only...

Jul 3, 2006 - Puerto Galera (Port of Galleons) n.b photo's taken from a website

Hi all, Situated on the beautiful island of Mindoro about 110 kilometers south of Manila, Puerto Galera is far enough away to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city crowds, yet within easy traveling distance from Manila International Airport. Figure about two hours from Manila to the port of Batangas and then another hour by ferry to Puerto Galera. The diving here is Magic. And the nightlife isn't bad either! I did cop two typhoons in the 12 days i was there, but that didn't affect the diving too much. The ease of the diving was a...
