I do my best to avoid overnight coaches (I can never get any sleep on them) but this time it was unavoidable so I arrived a little bleary eyed after my sleepless journey from Manila at 5.30 in the morning at the city of Legazpi. Legazpi is in itself an unremarkable city but is serves as a jumping off point for a trip to Mount Mayon, the worlds most active volcano, and Donsol where whalesharks gather in its murky waters and have a big feed for around 4 months of the year. Legazpi, Albay province This tale starts in Donsol. We miss the last van back to Legazpi (which left at 3pm instead of the expected 4pm), so we need to hire habal-habal (motorbike taxis) to whisk us 20 minutes to nearby Pilar, where we hoped to find a van or a bus. We find neither, so are forced to hire a van for the 45-minute trip to Legazpi. On the way I call 7 or 8 hotels, none of which have a room available. Turns out that Legazpi's month-long Magayon Festival is in full swing, and all rooms in town are booked solid for the entire month...
