Jan 10, 2011 - But the monkey's not watching....

He's slipped out to the kitchen To pile the dishes And answer the phone .... Happy New Year! 2011! Wow! I can't believe it has only been 10 days since I last checked in with all of you. If the first week and a half is any indication I am in for one hell of a year. I hope the New Year brings all of you everything. Roger and I rang in the new year on Boracay in grand fashion. We had a great meal followed by the biggest, craziest beach bash I've ever seen. There had to have been hundreds of thousands of people celebrating along the beach...

Sep 21, 2009 - Judgement Day

I get my number to see the doctor and wait for it to pop up on the electronic board as I sit on my blue-moulded plastic chair in the air-conditioned comfort of the large white-tiled waiting room. Mine comes up fairly quickly and soon I'm sitting in the waiting room proper, looking at the bamboo water feature in the corner, with a vague feeling of recognition, like when you see a face in the pub that you know from somewhere but can't quite place, when it finally dawns on me - the Aztec section of The Crystal Maze, it even gurgles in exactly...

Travels of a Kinnie

Sep 2, 2009 - Just can't get enough cock

Me, Dom and Mark catch a tricycle to the Dumaguete Cockpit and Recreation Center (what else they do here is never revealed), which after Malapascua is like going from the sawdust arena in Gladiator to the Colliseum. Rows of wooden seats stagger up from the metal-bound square glass walls of the cockpit, half of the hall divided from the other by a chain link fence, lending the place the air of a cage fight. The proceedings commence with the MC talking about the money bet so far on each bird, which are going through the same pre-match rituals...

Aug 29, 2009 - The streets of Dumaguete

Do nothing in the morning except buy a plectrum (medium strength, thanks Uncle) and then spend an hour in a fruitless search for a payphone I can use to make sure the doc will actually be there come Monday, but only succeed in getting overheated walking in the humid streets and decide to quit before I get too pissed off. Soon after, whilst speaking to Kinnie Snr via Skype in an internet cafe, a very attractive Filipino girl sits in the booth next to me and starts having a dirty online chat with someone. I can't resist having a peek and...

Travels of a Kinnie

Aug 26, 2009 - Dumaguete

We get a cab to the Southern Bus Terminal for the coach to the bottom tip of Cebu; hauling around all the dive gear on a jeepney just isn't an option. We get there and Dom pulls out a 500 peso note for the 55 peso ride in the forlorn hope that the cabbie might have change. Incredibly, the cab driver then says 'No problem, of course I have change'; keep your weeping statues and cornflakes that look like Jesus, that was a true miracle. Buses are an exception to the often casual attitude to time keeping here, and this one leaves bang on 06.30,...
