Jan 30, 2011 - Lunch at home with Sofie's family.
Sofie collected me at 11.30 and we walked a couple of blocks to get a Jeepney that will take us to near her home. When we got out, she asked me if I wanted to walk. It was only five blocks, so of course, I said yes. There were some interesting things to photograph on the wy, so I am glad to have chosing the walking option. When we arrived, I was very warmly greeted by Rose, who seemed thrilled to welcome me to their home. I met her husband Bing. They are sweet people, and very friendly. Sofie and Lyn were in the kitchen preparing lunch for...Jump to full entry
Jan 29, 2011 - Short shopping trip with Sofie.
My alarm rang at 6.30, but after a very sleep-deprived night, I did not feel at all like getting up. I dragged myself out of bed, made a coffee, and then decided to call Sofie, and let her know that I was not up to an 8am outing. She said that she will come by here at 3pm instead. So, at least I could go back to bed, and catch up on lost sleep. Not sure why, when I can't sleep at night, I always nod off quickly during the daytime, when I go back to bed in desperation!! I had my lunch in the dining room, of the hotel. It was quite funny,...Jump to full entry
Jan 28, 2011 - Cancelled trip, but shopping, and coffee and cake instead.
We had planned to go out of town to a nature park today, but it had rained a lot overnight, so Sofie decided that it would not be so good, and she called me at the hotel, to say that she would meet me at 11am instead. When she arrived she had her sister Lyn with her. Lyn is the next one older than Sofie. The oldest sister lives in Manila and is married with two little kids. We planned to go shopping and try and find the ear rings that I want for Dandan. We took a taxi to another shopping mall. We had no luck at all with the ear rings, but...Jump to full entry
Jan 27, 2011 - People's Park, then Nanay Bebeng for dinner.
A lovely lazy day today, as Sofie is not coming to collect me until 6pm. So, I did my cross stitch, watched TV, checked emails, etc. I had a tomato and onion omelette for lunch, this time knowing that it came with coffee included! About 4pm I went shopping at the shopping mall I have found near the hotel. I needed coffee, and found some. Also found Snickers bars - yum! I looked around for ear rings for Dandan, but did not manage to find the ones she likes. I did manage to find a new hair brush for myself. The one I have is slowly falling to...Jump to full entry
Jan 26, 2011 - Australia Day Downunder.
It was 8.30 when Sofie collected me this morning. Our first destination was Eden Garden Resort. The grounds are awesome. Extensive gardens, all lush and green. It is just a pity it is not the season for orchids to be flowering. There was quite a lot of colour, but could see that it would be totally amazing in the right season. There was a lovely kids animal section, where you could actually get up close to many varieties of animals, some big, but mostly small. And the butterfly house was terrific. I was trying my best to get photos but it...Jump to full entry
Jan 25, 2011 - Another museum, and lastly dinner at Jack's Ridge.
I had a lovely long lie in this morning, which was very welcome. My supposedly 'quiet' room was far from quiet. There was road works being done outside all night, with jack hammers working on and off all night, and general working noises, all of which made it difficult to sleep. So much for having a quieter room, I guess being at the front, on the second floor, is not going to make for a quiet environment. When I got up, I checked on the Cebu Pacific website, and discovered that I can pre-pay excess baggage, at a much lower rate, than at...Jump to full entry
Jan 24, 2011 - Banking, and sorting out accommodation, with Sofie.
Felt more human today, and got up at 8am. I checked emails, etc, while waiting for Sofie. She arrived at 10.30, with their driver Jun. I had decided that I would see if I could find a better hotel, as this one is not really all that comfortable for 8 nights. We did have a look at three others, in around the same price range, but nothing was worth the effort, so I decided to see if I could move to an upgraded room, in the Tower Inn. One of our stops was at a pizza shop, where Sofie wanted to buy some garlic bread. I bought some garlic...Jump to full entry
Jan 23, 2011 - Flight to Manila, and then on to Davao.
Our flight departed right on time, in fact we left the ground at 1am, so very good timing. I tried to sleep, but had no luck dozing off. I fidgetted around for a long time, and then finally gave up, and went back to reading my book. We landed in Manila at 4.15, which was 15 minutes early. The lines were long, and slow at immigration, and it took about 30 minutes to get through, but collecting my luggage was quick and easy. I was surprised to find Sofie waiting for me, when I exited. It was so good to see her. I had not expected her to be...Jump to full entry
Nov 8, 2008 - Samal Island
by Lora We visited our family's beach resort on Samal Island for an overnight stay. Along with us from Tagum came a pig from their piggery - to serve as our dinner (sorry vegetarian friends reading this). It was the first time we were able to witness a pig roast, which was interesting. You'd think it would take longer to cook a whole pig, but it only took about 1.5 hours over the blazing fire. I have to admit - it was quite tasty. Swimming, eating, hammock laying, reading, boating - lots of really stressful stuff going on :) We had a nice...Jump to full entry
Nov 6, 2008 - Kapalong - from the tree to your table
by Lora When I visited the Philippines as a child; my aunt and uncle's banana plantation was one of my fondest memories. I knew that I wanted Chris to also experience it, so I was excited to see it included on my family's very detailed itinerary prepared for us :) ! We spent some time at their farm, eating fresh fish from the pond and buko (young coconut) juice, straight from the tree, along with native durian fruit. Once we were good and full, we headed to the banana plantation, to see how bananas are processed. The plantation was huge,...Jump to full entry
Nov 6, 2008 - Tagum - cool experiences with cool organizations
by Lora Our family in Tagum set up some really neat experiences for us during our visit, knowing our interest in different social issues. We visited a Gawad Kalinga community; somewhat similar to Habitat for Humanity. "Gawad Kalinga" roughly translates to "To Give Care." Homes are built for and by the future recepients, typically those who were once living in depressed squatter dwellings. The communities are bright, clean, and colorful, with active gardens and community centers. We also had the chance to visit with a group of pastors living...Jump to full entry
Nov 1, 2008 - Kapalong - All Saint's Day
by Lora We read in our guidebook that All Saint's Day is a time to gather with family, to remember those whom have passed away. However, it's not really a time of mourning, as much as it is a time of celebration. Families gather together to eat, talk, and laugh. Family members were telling us that sometimes families will spend all night, until the following morning, at the cemetary; supplied with lots of food for everyone. When we pulled up to the cemetary in Kapalong to visit the graves of my uncle's family, I heard Guns n' Roses "Sweet...Jump to full entry
