Oct 3, 2011 - Cebu

A flying visit to the Philippines, in late, all day audit and back out the next morning so other than the drive to and from the airport and the factory I haven't seen much of Cebu. The factory owners also own a resort on the edge of Maktan Island and took us there for lunch, very much a Korean resort with few other nationalities there. I now know that Koreans have a very similar reputation to Brits for being extremely white and burning badly in the sun when they hit a holiday destination. The resort was nice with a very good buffet...

Jan 10, 2011 - Celebrating "Sinulog" in Cebu

Many people will know that the Philippines is a deeply religious country. So, no surprise that we arrived in Cebu during a religious festival. However, contrary to what I expected would be a solemn event, I was introduced to the Philippines equivalent of the Carnival of Brazil - SINULOG! The Sinulog festival honours Santo Nino (the Holy Child) and is a huge celebration for the people of Cebu. The festival is defined by it's grand parade where there are floats, bands and dancers dressed up in very elaborate costumes where everyone from the...

Aug 7, 2009 - Shop shop shop

Off to the Immigration Bureau, which because of the public holidays has a backlog of people and it is rammed and chaotic, like those police station reception areas you see in American cop films. After filling in a form and handing it in, I sit down but soon move after finding myself getting it in both earholes from two Germans (fat, bald, with superhot wives) having a conversation/shouting contest over me. Luckily the whole process is over within an hour and I hop into another jeepney and find myself at the SM Mall. Man, these guys love...

Aug 6, 2009 - Shopping paradise

Had planned on going to the Immigration Office today to extend my visa, but due to Cory Aquino's death, the office is shut, which means I either have to stay another day or get the dive shop to extend my visa when I get to Malapascua, which could be pricey. Still got loads of shopping to do, not least of which is for a guitar, which as luck would have it is a bit of specialty of Cebu, so I hop in a few jeepneys and then a cab and haul up to the most well known of them, Alegre. All the guitars here (and in the places around) are handmade...

Aug 5, 2009 - Back in the Philippines

So back to the Philippines, back to Cebu City, connecting through Manila, through an airport named after the guy who was assassinated there, Ninoy Aquino; can't quite make up my mind whether that's a touching reminder or a naff tribute. The cab ride to the hotel is on smooth tarmaced roads, with white on green signs in the American style, and this US influence is reinforced by the jeepneys that dominate the roads in a way that even the London cabbie would be hard to beat. After finally settling on a room, decide to go out for a wander and a...

Apr 12, 2009 - Over the Edge in Cebu

My first mission on this trip had nothing to do with the Lonely Planet job. I was assigned to do an article on Mactan Island by Interval World magazine (Interval is a timeshare association with something like 1 million members). They have a property in Mactan. Unfortunately, there isn’t much going on in Mactan besides diving and a few exclusive, all-inclusive resorts where people sequester themselves for a few days of pampering. Those were off limits, as they competed with Interval’s property on Mactan. The most eventful part of this...

Jun 28, 2008 - Cebu

Jun 27, 2007 - dive with thresher sharks and manta rays cebu island

Going to malapaskau island is a bit of a trip but worth it, its a small island located at the northern tip on cebu isaland in the Philippines, known for diving with sharks and mantas. The first dive for sharks we saw 1 thresher shark only about 3 mts long and about 7 mts away which was great, I completed the NITROX course while I was there and dived the same spot 3 days later, we were lucky and saw 4 manta rays 2 gluided right over our heads and at some 3 mts across it was an awsum experience, divers will know what i mean. Food and...

Feb 3, 2007 - Cebu Malapashue Island Mantas and Thresher Sharks ,Mucky stuff

Off to Cebu philippines to dive with the sharks (threshers / hammerheads / Manta Rays ) Bit of a journey to get to the island of Malapashcue, 4 or so hrs in a not so reliable taxi and then the bunka boat 45 mins but the diving is worth it. Fish life and reefs are good, manderin fish on the night dive. The currents can be strong and we did our first real drift dive here about 2 km I also did my Nitrox course here. The shark dives are 20 mts+ at a cleaning station, the sharks in the morning and Mantas in the arvo. I saw 1 shark thresher...

Dec 21, 2005 - Merry Christmas and a happy New Year !

Filipinas...

Nov 26, 2005 - Malapascua

"Rust is vrede". In Maya aangekomen,...
