Apr 26, 2016 - Boracay Island, Philippines

We island hopped from Tablas Island to Boracay Island, our last destination in Philippines. We now know what to expect - females to one side, males to the other, luggage on the ground, pat down, sniffer dogs - finally board the ferry. (Never did find out what they were searching for!) Even though this was just a short 3 hour journey, we were still assigned a bunk where we could leave our backpacks and a prayer was said to ensure a safe journey. Boracay is an Asian tourist destination, only 7 km long and 500 metres wide at its "waist", with...

Aug 10, 2012 - Boracay 2012 for my Mum's Birthday

For my mom's 60th bday celebration, my siblings and I have decided to give our dear mother a surprise getaway. Although, it was mainly I that arranged everything since I am the one who has been here (yeah, I think this would be the third time) and has the knowing about almost everything. From the flight schedules, to hotel reservations, to food and scheduled activities. To be honest I am really excited for this holiday eventhough its not my first time, but probably because this is the first time that I will be spending a holiday with...

Feb 21, 2012 - Boracay

I'm travelling fast again (moving every 3 days) so I've fallen behind on the journal by almost a week! At noon last Friday, Randy and I took a taxi from his apartment to the airport for our short flight to Boracay (Caticlan airport). At least it was supposed to be a short flight... Boracay is a small island in the Visayas group that harbours one of the most popular beaches in the Philippines: fine white sand and turquoise water. The beach is long (4 kms) and wide, which is a good thing since it must accommodate a long line-up of...

Jun 22, 2011 - Life on Boracay

After howling storms all night on Sunday, the weather broke on Boracay and Monday morning was cool and breezy—a little overcast, but a great day for beach-combing. I got up early and wandered down to the ocean to take some pictures. Beautiful. Then, I had breakfast at the little outdoor café at our hotel and checked the Internet while waiting for Ferdi, Toni, and Robyn to wake up. Felt so good to relax and watch the ocean. I needed cash to pay the hotel bill, so when Ferdi woke up, he and I went in search of an ATM. The first one didn’t...

Jun 19, 2011 - Trip to Boracay

Packing and leaving the Guesthouse in Manila was definitely bittersweet. I had begun to describe it as "home." And so enjoyed Ethel, Alvan, Gina, Eric, and Grace, the GYMN staff that keep the guesthouse running. On the other hand, I have been excited about the days I have in Boracay . . . a resort island in the middle part of the Philippines. There are two ways to fly to Boracay. You can either fly a little plane to Caticlan and take a boat across to Boracay, or you can take a larger plane to Kalibo, take a bus for a couple of hours, then...

Apr 14, 2011 - Boracay

Apr 5, 2011 - The Ultimate Junket: Boracay

The party in Manila was as raucous as expected. The theme was 'Rock the Casbah'. With little time to plan a costume, I somehow ended up wearing a hockey cup and white masquerade-ball-style mask, which I had randomly found in a National Bookstore in Subic. As for the cup ... don't ask. It just happened to be laying around Dan and Pita's apartment, where I was crashing. A Clockwork Quadaffi was the party line, but nobody seemed to get it and indeed I could not have resembled Quadaffi less - unlike one guest, who was kitted out in full Qadaffi...

Philippines Redux

Dec 31, 2010 - I pulled in to Nazareth, was feeling 'bout half past dead....

I just need some place where I can lay my head Hey mister can you tell me, where a man might find a bed He just grinned and shook my hand, and no was all he said.... Wow! 2010 is quickly approaching it's end. What a spectacular year I've had. I am now on Boracay a beautiful island in the Visayas, as a matter of fact the jewel of the Philippines. It has incredible white sandy beaches that are lined with swaying palm trees and is surrounded by the most amazingly blue water I have ever seen. It is also the busiest place in the country at...
