Nov 2, 2011 - Peru Jungle Adventure

I just got back from the jungle last night. My co-workers and I had a break from classes, so seven of us decided to go Moyobamba and Tingana. It took an overstuffed combi (van) and a super comfortable colectivo (bus) to get to Moyobamba. We stayed the night in a kind of gross hotel, but only cost S/10 per night, which is about $4. The food is so much better in the jungle than it is in Chachapoyas, and at $2-3 per meal, I´m sold. They have beans!!! Oh how I miss beans... The next morning we had to get up at 4:30 to catch a taxi to the...

Jul 6, 2010 - Moyobamba

Up and out 2 doors down by 4am. Pizana Express is waiting so we load up and take off to pick up other 2 passengers. A small town yet it took 15 min. or so to locate the place...no addresses in this part of town...and they weren't ready! Finally, a mother, 10 or 12 yr old son, older son, and dog get into car in back seat w/ Bon. Thinking we were going w/ 3 instead of 2, driver takes off but ends up at a 'University'...loosely speaking...it's a walled area w/ gates, being dark, I cannot see very many buildings. The older son rousts out the...

May 13, 2006 - Tarapoto

Aug 17, 2005 - Tarapoto

We only came to Tarapoto because that was where the flight went to. We wanted to get to Chachapoyas where there are large ruins that have not yet been developed for tourism. We have met a few travellers who recommended it. The bus to Chachapoyas would take about 9 hours and we would have to change after 7 hours. It was impossible to leave that day so we booked it for the following morning. The woman in the hotel told us about a small traditional Indian village we could go to for a few hours, where they still live in the traditional ways. It...

Nov 12, 2004 - Chachapoyas and Kuelap

Chachapoyas As we were so disappointed with the efforts of the Chmu we thought we'd warm up for the Inca trail with a trip to Chachapoyas to see the less visited fortress town of Kuelap. We were told there would be less Gringos, and that it would rival Macchu Picchu in splendour. We hadn't really thought this through as Chachapoyas was pretty much back the way we had come. We were looking at a four hour ride to Chiclayo, followed by a ten hour horror overnight into Chacha. If all had gone well we'd have arrived at 4:30am. As it happened it...
