Aug 11, 2013 - Uros and Taquile Islands

We arrived in Puno for 3 nights. We had a day trip to the Uros Islands (floating islands) and Taquile Island that are on Lake Titicaca. Lake Titicaca is 118 miles long and 50 miles wide and is the highest navigable lake in the world with a surface elevation of 12,507 ft. The first stop was at this island that is built out of reeds. The island we visited had 25 families living on it. Their way of life is very simple, but the people seem very happy. It is hard to believe that this is how they live, no running water and no real electricity. We...

Jan 24, 2011 - Homestay on Lake Titicaca

We left the hotel in 'limo's' which are nothing like limo's at home!!! Limo's here are I guess like a tuk tuk a man riding a bicycle with a couple of seats on the front with us in them!!! Simon rode it a little bit of the way. The limo took us to the port where we boarded a little boat just for our tour group to take us to Taquille Island and then onto our homestay. There wasn't much on Taquille Island just a big walk up to a shop selling hand made products, lunch, then a big walk down!! It took us 3 hours to get there!! Lake Titicaca is...

Aug 31, 2008 - Isla Taquile

Today I took a boat to an island in Lake Titicaca called Isla Taquile. It{s a 3 hour boat ride from Puno, and most people just go, look at the main plaza, and go back to Puno. Even for a short visit, it is interesting, mainly because of the way the local people dress. The women dress very similarly to other Quechua women that I have seen, except that they wear shorter skirts, only to the knee. They also wear colorful yarn tassels, and supposedly you can tell by the size of the tassels if a woman is married or not. I couldn{t really see any...

Jun 26, 2008 - C`mon! Be strong and eat a rat..

This morning we woke up to Irma knocking on our door trying to tell us that she had boiled some water and put it in a bucket for us outside or bedroom door so we could wash our faces. Awwww, sweet. She called to us when breakfast was ready. We had that yummy tea again and she also made us pancakes with strawberry jam. After brekky we packed up, said goodbye to Nelida (Sylvester had already left for the day) and began the walk back down to the Port for our boat trip back to the mainland. Luckily, on our way we saw Sylvester but he was in the...

Feb 18, 2008 - Uros and Taquile Islands

Yesterday was a free day in Arequipa and we all went into the centre of town to shop, visit museums, revisit spots we saw the day before and just generally hang out. In the afternoon we made our way to the airport to catch our flight to Juliaca which is located at 3,822 metres above sea level and has the only commercial airport that serves the area of Lake Titicaca and its lakeside town of Puno which has a population of some 160,000 people...the air at this height (almost 12,500 feet) is quite thin and at night it definitely gets a little...
