Oct 16, 2007 - Iquitos: Dr Asigbetse I presume? Finally stepping out of the jungle

Eventually we set eyes on our final destination, Iquitos. ... The port of Iquitos was huge with the row after row of river barges big and small, new to basically floating wrecks; even the Peruvian navy had got in on the act with naval barges bristling with guns. ... Iquitos was where I finally had to say a very sad adios to Sarah and Leah, "ladies it was an absolute pleasure, thanks for the idea and the company". ...

Oct 15, 2007 - Mazan: We're almost there....just the mighty Amazon to go

Last day of canoe boat travel and it's a long one of about five hours which wouldn't have been so bad if the weather hadn't turned nasty. Was such a relief to finally step off the canoe for the last and final time when we got to the docks at Mazan although I've never felt so conspicuous as it seemed like the whole town was out on the main pier watching us get off the canoe. ... Mazan is a small river port town that occupies a narrow stretch of land having the Rio Napo on one side and the Rio Amazonas (Amazon River). ... The plan is to save ourselves a whole day of navigation by crossing overland twenty minutes in motorized rickshaw taxis rather than following the Napo round til it meets the Amazon.Last day of canoe boat travel and it's a long one of about five hours which wouldn't have been so bad if the weather hadn't turned nasty. Oct 13, 2007 - Curaray: Ones worst nightmare, a jungle medical emergency

Nightmare in the jungle One of the biggest fears for anyone in the jungle or a similar remote location removed completely from society and all the amenities that we take for granted is that something bad might happen which would require immediate medical attention. This meant that we offloaded ourselves and all the surplus equipment and supplies onto another riverside beach on the River Curaray and waved off Nathan with Diego and Meliton to make the last stretch to Santa Clothilde as speedily as possible. ... We all just watched the canoe speed off, everyone's thoughts with our stricken friend. Oct 12, 2007 - Pantoja: Welcome to Peru...now get the hell out!!

Welcome to Peru. Unfortunately our planned 2 days in the Lagunas was cut short because the water level was too low and having ventured deep into the system we might not be able to get out again therefore we turned back onto our selves and crossed back into Peru heading for Pantoja where we had to go through the official immigration formalities, but not, as we were soon to find out, in the official manner. ... Only snakes and bloody fools trek through the jungle at night We leave Pantoja and cruise down the Rio Napo which had now opened up into a huge river compared to previously and spend the night in a Quechua village called Cabo Pantoja near Tempestad where we were back to camping though inside a large wooden community hall and school house. ... That night we did a night hike which is scary on its own right but before hand Diego had the guide books out pointing out all the snakes in the region the majority of which ranged from poisonous to "you're screwed!" He highlighted the Bushmaster which is deadly and we had a good chance of coming across one on the hike, his advice being that the are attracted to light so if you see one turn off your torch immediately.Welcome to Peru.
