Sep 2, 2013 - Civilisation again!

Ah… Civilisation again. OK. I admit it. I am a city-girl, through and through. I had a lovely long weekend in Lima. I splurged and stayed in a 5 star hotel. When I checked in, the man at reception talked me into paying $30 a night more and upgrading myself to a suite. He said I wouldn’t regret it. He was right. (Funny… when I stay in hotels here in Cusco and surrounds, I pay $30 a night – not upgrade at a cost of $30 a night! And the places are fine – certainly not luxurious, but fine.) The suite was bigger than the apartment I am living...

Aug 22, 2013 - Lima- Welcome to the Tucan Tour

The second day in Lima i awoke early (or late- depending on the time zone). This allowed me the opportunity to do some study (geek). My first mission of the day was a short walk to the supermarket. Boy it´s fun to see different kinds of food. Second mission was a walk to Miraflores Beach. More a cliff face with a few meters of sand. None the less it was relaxing. There was also a dozen keen surfers exploring the Pacific Ocean. The waves weren´t too big and it seems most cruised on long boards. The third and final mission was to the post...

Aug 10, 2013 - Lima Day 1

We arrived in Lima at 5.30am after flying through the night from London via Madrid. Our airport transfer went smoothly, despite the driver not speaking English and us not remembering the name of our hotel. On arriving at Casa Suyay we discovered we couldn't actually check in until 3.00pm that day (something Trailfinders didn't mention...), meaning we couldn't have a shower and would have to pay $10 for breakfast. We quickly decided to have the breakfast and then use the early start to start exploring Lima as we only had a day and a half in...

Absolute Peru

Aug 7, 2013 - Lima

We had a super long day in Lima. We had a red eye flight from Miami and we couldn't check into our hotel until 2:00 p.m. So, we hit the road for a tour of Lima. . It was really very busy and the traffic was horrible. I'm glad we went but was happy to move on. It was to bed early for our 3:45 a.m. departure for the airport. Off to Arequipa tomorrow.

Jun 26, 2013 - Travel Rookie

My first full day in Lima I spent walking around the city and getting an idea about what I wanted to do over the next 6 weeks. (Something I probably done more research on BEFORE the trip) Anyways, I met a girl in the hostel (Sass –UK) that was doing pretty much the same so we bounced ideas that we each had off each other and got rough plans together for our individual trips. I was feeling so out of sorts and a bit nervous about the trip at this point. Yes, I have had plenty of time to figure out what I wanted to do but I just kept putting...

Jun 21, 2013 - a little bit of lima

for me cos we were in the centre of lima this time, it felt a lot smaller than what it did the first time out in the burbs. i dont know why it just felt dead wee. had a stroll, met a fruitcake or two, had some really bad buns, had a really good munch, saw a buch of squealing teen girls being held off outside the sheraton hotel for some japanese boy band. the most popular member of whom it seems, is a boy named kevin. so there you go. we made the mistake of following the recommendation of good old priscilla from the hostel (and we so know...

Jun 14, 2013 - Day numero uno - Lima, Peru.

After a very turbulent flight with little sleep we land at the Lima airport. Customs took just under two minutes as they looked at us and saw no reason to be suspicious. After customs we were bombarded by drivers desperate to give us a ride. Luckily we found the correct driver and weren't kidnapped. Ten minutes into the ride, our driver smashed into a curb a popped a tire. We pulled over in a very suspicious side road and nervously hid our electronics as he quickly changed the destroyed tire. After a good scare we arrived at the hotel,...

Jun 14, 2013 - Surgery at 2 PM

I can assure you LindaRose is comfortable after surgery today. Dr. Raul Gutierrez, her orthopedic surgeon, gave her a mended knee cap and re-worked the knee joint. She came back from the recovery room about 8 PM. I am happy to report that she was in very little pain, in fact, has never complained of much discomfort. She is in a well-equipped semi-private room and will be discharged on Wednesday June 19 if all goes well. LindaRose will be in the care of our friends Janet Vitaliano and family in Lima. She'll stay at their condo until she is...

2013 In Ecuador

Jun 13, 2013 - Black Thursday

Flew to Lima this morning and checked in at Hostal Iquique. This is the worst that I have to report: LindaRose tripped on the sidewalk as we were walking to lunch. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital where x-rays showed that she fractured her knee cap. We prevailed on our friend Janet Vitaliano for help. Janet supervised getting LindaRose transported by ambulance to Clinica Ricardo Palma in San Isidro and under the supervision of orthopedic surgeon Raul Gutierrez. She will have surgery tomorrow to repair the knee cap and joint. I spent...

May 22, 2013 - All About Peruvian Food

Today our sightseeing was all about food. We were taken out for the day by a friend of Barbara Hood and Dick Zapata, my renters back in Cuenca. Janet Vitaliano and her daughter Shanell met us at the hotel. We are headed for the Chinatown of Lima for lunch. Barrio Chino is the second largest Chinatown in the Americas. Only San Francisco´s Chinatown is larger. Lima's Chinatown has the largest population of first-generation Chinese in all of Latin America. Chinese born in Peru number more than a million. Peru's Barrio Chino is famous for...
