Apr 17, 2013 - Lima
@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND Excerpts from the Lonely Planet – Peru: Lima has survived endless cycles of destruction and rebirth. Regular apocalyptic earthquakes, warfare and the rise and fall of civilizations have resulted in a city that is as ancient as it is new. When Francisco Pizarro sketched out the boundaries of his ‘City of Kings’ in January of 1535, there were roughly 200,000 indigenous people living in the area. By the 18th century, the Spaniards’ tumbledown village of adobe and wood had given way to a vice regal capital, where fleets of...

Apr 5, 2013 - Lima, Peru (In Transit)
@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND Excerpts from the Lonely Planet – Peru: On its surface, Lima is no thing of beauty. A sprawling desert city clinging precariously to dusty cliffs, it spends much of the year marinated in a perpetual fog that turns the sky the color of Styrofoam. It is loud, chaotic, and gritty; much of its architecture is bulky and gray. Foreign travelers tend to scuttle through on their way to more pastoral destinations in the Andes. This is unfortunate. Lima may not wear its treasures on its sleeve, but peel back the foggy layers and...

Mar 16, 2013 - At Sea
March 16,2013 At Sea I’m out for my morning walk while Cherie tries to sleep in. Today’s choice of walking music for my MP3 player is Andrea Bocelli; a much slower pace to fit today’s mood. I don’t walk as fast as when I listen to “Fleetwood Mac” or “Creedence Clearwater Revival” but I’m in no hurry today. It’s warm out and there is a lite rain falling. As I rounded the bow of the ship, the bridge announced a pod of dolphins playing off the bow. There were about 35 dolphins in this pod. Unlike the film clips you see on TV, they swam toward...

March 14,2013 Callao and Lima Peru ( day 1) We docked at Callao harbor at about 10 am. Callao is Peru’s main shipping point and is very busy. Peru has 30 million people; 700,000 live in Callao and 8 million live in Lima. There is no clear delineation between the cities of Callao and Lima. The traffic is very heavy and I think passing a driving test includes proficiency in the use of the horn. I attempted to decipher the horn code. Two short beeps means “move it!”, one long beep is not fit for print. Today we have a tour scheduled from 1-9...

Right now I'm in Arequipa which is located in southern Peru. It is surrounded with mountains and deserts. For some reason, I'm super, super SUPER scared about the Misti volcano. But its suppose to be a symbol. This city is called "The White City" because the volcanos rock is white, pretty cool isn't it? Later I climed the mountains that surround Arequipa. I felt a little woozy, but then I got used to it. lastly I rented a house and went to sleep.
