May 19, 2013 - Must Be Some Way Outta Here

We spent Sunday afternoon walking the Huancayo street market and enjoying pisco sours and a complimentary calientito (hot toddy of rum) at La Cabaña Restaurant. There was a parade on the main square but we never could figure out what the occasion was. Culinary note: Papa a la Huancaina is a local specialty here. It consists of a boiled potato topped with a creamy white sauce of cheese, oil, hot pepper, lemon and egg yolk. It is served with an olive and sliced boiled egg and enjoyed as a cold potato salad.

May 18, 2013 - Huancayo Bus Adventure

It was a long, long 8-hour day on a plush Oltursa bus which took us to Huancayo. This mid-size city has been described as the wild, wild west of Peru. So far all we can see on the street where Hostal las Lomas in situated are many casinos and chifas which are restaurants with Chinese food. We had a late dinner and called it a night. Other than thinking this trip would put us on our way south toward Cusco and beyond, there was really no reason to come to this city. We were hoodwinked into believing it was of some interest by a Scot we met in...

Sep 28, 2009 - Last Stop

It is coming to an end now. I am in Lima airport waiting for my flight back to London (via Madrid). I am going to be knackered by the end of it all. I spent last night on a 16-hour train ride, and I probably got no more than 3 hours sleep, ahead of me there is a 12-hour flight to Madrid, a gap of 2 hours or so at the airport, a flight to London of 3 hours, and a bus journey to Cambridge of other 3 hours. I am not really looking forward to this. However, I am eager to get back home. The last stop of this round the world trip was a train...

May 29, 2006 - Andean highlands

Damn Israelies!! I must have been woken some 13 times last night... People ringing the door bell at all hours of the night and then stomping around and talking at full pitch and then the freakin Israely lads deciding to play soccer in the courtyard at 3am - NOT HAPPY!! So, we are headed west for the small Peruvian highland town of Huancayo. The bus, to our delight is much cheaper than the trusty Lonely Planet suggests but it is, well, how do I say.... shit! It is packed with stinky people, there is no toilet, the seats are uncomfortable and...
