May 18, 2011 - Amazon Jungle (Puerto Maldonado)

A short flight from Cuzco, high in the Andes, to Puerto Maldonado, deep in the lowlands of the Amazon jungle. Travel by motorized canoe to our lodge in the Tambopata Rainforest Area, which holds the world record for the most bird sightings in one area. Explore the jungle with local guides before flying to Lima for a final night out. About half of Peru is located within the Amazon Basin, however, due to its isolation, not a lot of it is available to the casual traveler. Puerto Maldonado is the region’s principal city and is serviced by air...

May 18, 2009 - The Amazon rainforest

After only 2 hours sleep I got up early and headed to the airport for my flight to Puerto Maldonado. All I wanted to do was sit on the plane so I could sleep, but of course my flight was cancelled so I had to get the next...luckily only an hour and a half later. My guide, Richardo, collected me from the airport and we met up with the 4 others in my group. To get to the lodge took about 2 and a half hours in total as it was a bus journey to the river, an hour on the river and then a short walk to the lodge. The lodge was lovely! I wasn´t...

Jul 2, 2008 - Puerto Maldonado

We were up at 5am, breakfast was at 5.30am. At 6am Me, Frank, Sarah, Ugo, Shane, Andrea a couple of other new additions to our group got on a boat and headed down stream for about 30mins. We had a short walk through the jungle until we came across a couple of long rowing boats on a narrow long pond. We then had the pleasure of paddling ourselves along the narrow pond for an hour or so, would have been shorter if everyone had pulled their weight! Frank and a few others. At the other end of the pond we walked a bit more through the jungle to...

Jul 1, 2008 - Puerto Maldonado

We went for a trek in the jungle, painted ourselves with the fruite of a tree that didnt want wash off for over a week! I wrote my name on my knuckles, Frank wrote his football team on his arm. We went fishing unsuccessfully, and then swimming in the river. In the later afternoon we had a boat ride around a lake looking at birds and alligators. The evening was spent in the bar with our new French Canadian friends Ugo, Shayne and Sarah, and with Andrea a regular canadian.

Jun 30, 2008 - Puerto Maldonado

We were up early and checked out at 8.45am, the hotel we were in wasnt cheap, $55 for a twin room per night, so I dont think we will be going anywhere that expensive for the rest of the trip. We went to Cusco airport and flew to Puerto Maldonado, the flight was only 20mins, annoyingly it was 20mins late arriving and then waited on the runway for 20mins. At Puerto Maldonado my bag was last off the plane which was a little worrying but at least it showed up this time. We were met at the airport by the Eco Amazonia rep and then headed off to...

Jun 17, 2008 - Weird Amazon animals

This morning was yet another early morning, as we were going to take a walk through the jungle. We got our gumboots - luckily, because the track was very muddy in places - and began the hike. There were many birds and other animal noises coming from the trees and we were lucky enough to experience the sounds and sights of hundreds of monkeys above us in the trees, jumping from one tree to the other. We made it to our destination, a lakein the Amazon Basin, and were in luck once again when we saw a rare group of otters playing in the water....

Jun 16, 2008 - The Amazon

Today we flew to the Amazon Jungle community of Peurto Maldonado, our starting point to visit the Amazon Jungle. Upon arrival, we had a short tour of the town and it was here that we began the journey to the jungle lodge. We travelled by bus (again) for about 1.5 hours until we reached the Amazon River. We then travelled 30kms by motorised canoe for about 90mins. It was quite a sureal feeling being in a canoe down the Amazon, although it did look much like any other rainforest that we´ve seen. After stopping at a checkpoint and getting a...

Mar 25, 2008 - Puerto Maldonado/Libertador tambopata Lodge

We flew from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado and from there we took a bus ride to the Tambopata River and then a 2 hour boat trip up the river to get to the jungle lodge. Along the way we saw some howler monkeys, Caiman (in the alligator family) as lots of different birds. Our guide, Edwin, was great and our group consisted of the 6 of us and 3 guys from Ireland. The lodge was NOTHING like what we expected. We were thinking we would be roughing it and sleeping in hammocks with no comforts…instead there were individual huts for two people each...

Jan 20, 2008 - Peru: Amazon Rainforest, Inca Trail Trek, Lake Titicaca

Ive finished my Geckos tour now, the 17 days just flew by. The main highlights were the Amazon Rainforest, the Inca trail trek and Lake Titicaca. The Amazon Rainforest was really great, we stayed at these lodges in the forest which were really beautiful but with no electricity (cold showers, yikes!) and we had excursions and activities and the such. For example, we went pirana fishing and I caught one! (we let them go again afterwards), ok so it wasnt very big but it was still a pirana. And we also went for a night hike which was probably...

Oct 25, 2007 - Jungle

Hi We just got back to Cusco yesterday after 4 days and 3 nights in Eco Amazonia jungle lodge near Puerto Maldonado, on the Madre de Dios River. Here are the highlights (and lowlights.) First of all, I've got to let you know that my bias is against very hot places. I'm a Canadian boy through and through, and any time the temperature gets higher than 30C in Fredericton, I retreat to the basement! So, you'll have some idea how I reacted to 35C+ temps with very high humidity and nary a basement in site. That's right, I melted! By the second...
