Jun 18, 2014 - Colca Canyon to Cusco, Peru

Wednesday 18th June 2014 Coporaque/Colca Canyon to Cusco, Peru After breakfast today we left on the minibus at about 7:00am and drove back down from the town to meet up with our truck Magaly again. Today we have been on the truck for 5 months - it doesn't seem possible, so we had some photos taken in front of the truck. You become quite attached to the truck as it is your "home". Once we left the meeting point where we had a hot chocolate and took some photos of the view - always stunning in this part of Peru - we headed off again through...

Mar 9, 2014 - Day 1: Visiting Machu Picchu

When I woke up this morning i had complementary breakfast that my hotel offered and started off with my day. I went sightseeing and took of to Cusco,Cusco, Peru to explore the wonderful Machu Picchu. Before I left for Machu Picchu I enjoyed lunch at Jack's cafe. Machu Picchu, located about 7,000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains, is a pretty sight to see. This historical land mark was built in the middle of 15th century and was used as a military fortress, then it was later used as an estate for an Inca royalty. One of the most...

Mar 2, 2014 - Inca Education

After maybe 4 hours of sleep we left for the airport at 5AM. Since there was so little traffic it only took about 20 minutes to get there! Checked in to find out our flight was been delayed until 9:15! Finally on the plane with take off at 10AM, the plane was delayed arriving from Bolivia! Flight to Cusco was only 1 hour, but was beautiful! So nice to see the green valleys among the snow covered mountains. After arriving at the hotel and doing laundry we had a light lunch. Feeling some of the effects of the altitude (2 miles above sea...

The 7th Continent

Dec 8, 2013 - Scorching sun. Rain. Hail. Sleet. Snow. We’ve had it all.

Let me start off by saying that the archaeological sites of Northern Peru are absolutely spectacular as are some of the museums. I had no idea they’d be that good. So, if you are ever thinking of doing a trip to Peru, make sure to add in Trujillo and Chiclayo to your itinerary. Mind you, the cities themselves are nothing to write home about, but the museums and the surrounding archaeological sites are stunning. From the hot, scorching sun of Chiclayo we flew to much cooler Arequipa. It is a gorgeous city. It’s very modern but also maintains...

Nov 18, 2013 - Peru and Bolivia

Hello family and friends from La Paz in Bolivia. This will be brief as I'm finding it more difficult to do Trip Journal entries now - weaker WiFi in the hotels and especially time-consuming or sometimes impossible to upload photos; I'm continuing to be affected by the high altitude; the small group tour (Tucan) I'm traveling with now is either quite busy or spending long hours on the road in public buses. So, more challenging, still very interesting and we're on the trail less traveled now. Just a quick list of places and I'll let the...

Nov 3, 2013 - An ending

Oct 31, 2013 - Lima to Cusco to the Sacred Valley

Lima to Cusco to Ollantaytambo Wednesday October 30, 2013 By John, edited by Lois Wednesday morning we got up at 5 AM to pack and hopefully get some breakfast at our hotel. Turns out all we could get was a cup of tea to wash down one of our granola bars. Lois got a tangerine. The guide picked us up at 6:30 and we made it to the airport before 7:30 for our 9:30 flight. Unfortunately the plane was so over sold we were booked on the next flight which left at 9:50 AM. This gave us time for a breakfast sandwich at a small café in the Lima...

Oct 11, 2013 - Cusco Day 2

On our free day, we wandered through Cusco, enjoying the atmosphere of this vibrant city. A few museums and a lingering lunch sitting on a balcony overlooking the main square. This is where the guinea pig stopped squealing and ended up on a plate! For entertainment, we watched a massive protest March through the square, lots of police with riot shields, but from what we saw, it was all very civilised. Think we could stay here much longer than our three nights.

Oct 10, 2013 - Cusco

Welcome to Cusco, a delightful city, once the Capital of the Incan Empire and now an UNESCO cultural Heritage site. We immediately felt comfortable here, our hotel, Palacia del Inka, was one of the oldest in Cusco and was most impressive. LAN Airways wrote this hotel up as having the best Pisco Sour and Cuy in Cusco, they both were magnificent. We had a few quieter days here, giving us time to relax and wind down - and we even got to have two sleep ins - WOW! Had a little trouble getting wifi, but knew all would be well when Jesus came to...

Sep 26, 2013 - Syg

Sep 20, 2013 - Maras-Moray m.m
