Jan 30, 2018 - Cusco and the wandering tourists
Today we were left to our own devices to explore Cusco. The hotel staff told us that there was an event going on at the planiterium tonight to celebrate the full moon, which is the biggest one of the year. They contacted the people and told us to be ready at the Plaza for 5:30 in the evening. Armed with this knowledge and our vouchers for various museums we embarked on our day. First stop was the Alpaca garment shop as Alison and Irene wanted to try some shawls. They both got really nice ones and Alison took them back to the hotel whilst we...Jump to full entry
Jan 29, 2018 - Cusco and a god like Overman!
Stuff from yesterday - forgot to say that we were nearly scammed by a chap at the airport. When we came to get our bags a chap started calling out Overman. We responded and he helped us get our bags. I thought about it and realised that he had probably seen our name on a board and just called it out. As we came outside there was a person from the tour operator with a board saying Overman. We quickly asked if he was with them and they said no. Fortunately he took our bags to the minibus and loaded them on. He then asked for a tip and we said...Jump to full entry
Awoke to the sound of cockerel crowing at 5am in the Heart of city of Cusco. This just demonstrates the cultural and technological shock that is Peru. Evidenced by women washing their clothes in the river whilst on their mobile phones, or the mud/cow pat hut with a satellite dish!!!. Everyone is a shop owner or sales person, the only problem is their products are the same as everyone's. It is such a hard subsistence existence, if they do not sell their products there is no alternative income. We have noted that the pressure to sell is much...Jump to full entry
Jan 28, 2018 - Moving day - off to Cusco and the Theobalds
Today we had to get up at 5 for the trip to the airport. We had breakfast at 6 and waiting for our transport. There was a marathon being held along the seafront so we had to go through the old city to get to the airport. Very nice buildings that we will see more off in the next week or so. Arrived at the airport after seeing kamikaze motor cyclist and taxis enjoying the competition of little traffic so they could cut through the lorries and buses. We were put on the earlier flight and had to rush through the airport only to find that there...Jump to full entry
Jan 28, 2018 - Puno to Cusco Bus Trip
I got up at 5:15 to take the sunrise over the Lake unfortunately it was cloudy but still took some overcast photographs. Said to goodbye to Puno and headed north on a 36 seater executive coach on the La Punta deal Sol, The Road of the Sun to Cusco. I think the reason why it is executive is that there are only 12 of us on the coach. 4 Peruvian, 4 Germans, 2 English our guide Eric for the day and the Driver. The coach has wi fi and I am completing the trip whilst on the move another first. First stop after 90 minutes was a village called...Jump to full entry
Dec 26, 2017 - First time to have wi-fi
Obviously the picture label pirhna fishing is a catfish!, i have tried to change it twice! I give up! The Amazon is amazing. While on the water looking for birds and wild life, the misquitos were not bad. But during our jungle walk, they were thick. But my Craghopper insect repellant clothe did the trick. No bites! We have seen dozens of hawks, terns, kingfishers, ospreys, caracara, swifts, swallow, etc. but the little long nose bats were really cool. We saw a 3 toed sloth the first day! We did fish for pirhna. Frank and I did not have the...Jump to full entry
Jun 13, 2016 - Machu Picchu
We visited Machu Picchu for 2 days. We arrived in the afternoon and had a hike throughout the ruins. The day was very sunny and our pictures reflect the beauty of the mountains. Hiking throughout the ruins was somewhat difficult because of the elevation. We were easily out of breath climbing the many, many stairs throughout the ruins. On our second visit, we had rain, and the rain cleared sufficiently to hike throughout the lower part of Machu Picchu. The morning was very foggy, as you will see from the pictures. I thought the pictures we...Jump to full entry
Jun 9, 2016 - Lima to the City of Cusco
So we left Lima and flew to Cusco very early the following morning. The elevation of Cusco is higher than Lima. We took a day trip to the city square and a convent, but road along the countryside and was able to experience the beginning of the Sacred Valley. It is called the Sacred Valley because it is the one area where growing crops have always been successful. The right amount of water and the right amount of sun, with areas of very rich soil. You will see the statue of a guinea pig which is what they eat here in Peru. We will have an...Jump to full entry

Sep 20, 2015 - Going 5 miles to get 1/2 a block...yi yi.
Sunday. It was nice to have no urgent reason to get up and get going today! We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast and then decided to go find the Museo de Historia Regional so we'd do something kind of constructive with our free day. Ah, best laid plans.... See the pciture of the map (#7 I think) to follow along. According to the map, the museum was #12 (toward the top of the map with the ?? next to it). Here's how that whole thing went: 1) Left our hotel to go to the Plaza de Armas (the big circle) as the museum was beyond that. At the plaza,...Jump to full entry
Sep 19, 2015 - A Day in Ruins...literally.
Saturday. Ow, ow, ow, oooowwww....my legs are killing me from those stupid gnat bites. I'd post a pic but it's horrifically gross; the small bites have spread out to bright red "planets" all over. The skin has tightened up around each planet so everytime I move it hurts. elise's friend, Doug, visited Machu Picchu a couple of years ago and says his bug welts lasted for weeks...I can't handle that!!! I've coated them all with Neosporin tonight so hoping to see some improvement in the morning. You can tell who's been to MP already just walking...Jump to full entry
