Aug 8, 2013 - Arequipa

We took a flight from Lima to Arequipa in the morning. When we landed we couldn't believe how beautiful it was. Arequipa is about 8000 feet above sea level. Brian and I did not experience any problems with the altitude, but many of our tour group noticed the elevation. We checked our luggage at the hotel and hit the streets. Arequipa is a beautiful city. After walking around for a couple of hours we met some of our group for lunch. Yes, we tried Guinea Pig. It wasn't too bad. It had a lot of bones and not very much meat. Probably won't...

Jul 12, 2013 - Llamas, Alpacas, Mules, and Moleskin

The last two days were spent in Colca Canyon about three hours outside of Arequipa. Lucia and I got a taxi to the hostel where we would be leaving most of our stuff that we didn’t need for the trek around 2:45am to be picked up by a van to head out to the canyon area. There are two canyons in this area that connect in one spot that is one of the deepest, if not the deepest, canyon in the world. After a bouncy 3 hour ride with minimal sleep we finally arrived at our first stop that is known for having condors flying. I guess the condor and...

Jul 9, 2013 - Getting Acclimated

We arrived in Arequipa early in the morning on Monday. Lucia has a friend that previously stayed with a guy from Arequipa that she met through the couch-surfer website. For those of your not familiar with this site, people create profiles and when traveling they can contact people in places they are going and arrange to stay at their houses for free and they can also host others when they are home. I have heard of this site and have friends that have used it, but have never done it myself until now. Obviously it could open the door from...

Jun 20, 2013 - the countdown to sleep begins....woohoo! boo to leavin arequipa tho

today was just a semi frenzied mornin gettin packed up ready for the final run to lima. sorry to leave arequipa, cos its a lovely, pretty relaxed place with a a great climate, and cos i know it means more long hours on a bus which i have grown to hate, and that the end of that journey means no more brilliant climate, which ive had for such a short time. expected it all to be warm but it wasnt, i froze my way round only startin to thaw in chile, of all places, and finally thawing out in arequipa. no fair. loved every minute but would have...

Jun 18, 2013 - day of condors and decadance

started off in a minibus with 4 other people and a cute but awful tour guide. we headed up to the canyon with some annoying french chick demanding we stop every 5 seconds to take pics of the same valley...bearing in mind theres a 2 hour time window when the condors do their flying...i got out and 'had a word' with the tour guide about getting a fuckin move on. when i got back in the van louise asked what he had said, i said he tried to distract me from point by pointing out all the different colours in my hair, she said i should have told...

Jun 17, 2013 - heading for colca canyon via a stopoff in yanque, colca valley

hideous wasted hours at bus station (again) though at least sitting in the sun and i did pull off one of the biggest farts ever, then hideous long bus trip (again) down into colca valley to yanque. a tiny dusty wee town, really cute once you seen it in daylight, and they have this loudspeaker which starts at early oclock to tell everyone to get up for work and to relay news of where a lost donkey or cow or whatever might have wandered off to. thats how small the place is. kina cool.

Jun 16, 2013 - arsing around in Arequipa

Spent a day soon some sun lovin and general cruisin around. Lou went and got some braw pics at the santa catalina monastery. She had a great time and chowed down a huge slab of carrot cake in the sun. Bein over the old/religious pish i just sat in the sun. I tried a Turkish meatball wrap thing at the place Lou likes and gobbed most of it in the serviette, one of the barfest things I ever put in my mouth. Lesson learned.

Jun 14, 2013 - ah good old civilisation... and the uncivilised shit that comes with it

Switched hostels today....last nights was ok and the guy super helpful and a night off Lous snoring so very sweet, but alas his hostel is half complete, so we switched to a cheaper but better one. Unfortunately we chose school chucking out time to make our way down the street for lunch and some sticky fingered wee arsewipe took the opportunity of the heaving masses to relieve Lou of her purse >.< thank fuck my visa works now! One yummy lunch later we headed to the tourist polis to report said ragamuffin and by the time the fat bastard had...

Jun 13, 2013 - some civilisation again

Got to Arequipa after a long haul to find a lovely city and the one that turned out to be my favourite of all the ones we've visited. First night spent in separate rooms (quiet!) in a hostel which was ok but only partially finished, so despite the very nice and helpful owner we decided to move on the next day.good first night tho....instantly discovered each of ours favourite eateries....lous being the Taliban place (ok a falafel place) and mines been el ekeko with the best hot chicken sandwiches ever and the only decent chips in the whole...

Jun 12, 2013 - Free Arequipa Walking Tour

The free walking tour left at noon from Plaza de San Francisco. Who knew we would ever see our enthusiastic and energetic guide from the free walking tour we took back in Cusco. Jonathan had told us that he would also be running tours in Arequipa in the future but we never expected to be part of the inaugural tour of Arequipa. Jonathan walked us all over Arequipa to places we had never seen in the many days we've been here. The walk included stops for samples of molecular pisco sours and alpaca lomo saltado at Arthur Restaurant, through...

Jun 11, 2013 - Rafting Rio Chili

Today we're going river rafting. The trip has been billed as a 6 km. downriver ride on the Rio Chili after being provided with all of our gear and safety instruction. We were treated to Class I to Class IV rapids which were really intimidating, to say the least. A guest at our hotel named Michael from Northumberland, England, and Alex, who mans the tour desk at our hotel, were the other crew members on our raft along with a guide.
