May 12, 2012 - La testimonianza dei vulcani

My Big Trip

Nov 14, 2011 - Arrived in Arequipa

ARRIVED IN THE WHITE CITY We arrived in Arequipa 7am after a 9 hour bus ride. We were only able to sleep on and off. It was a long ride! The seats went back. You got a blanket and pillow. And there was a toilet but only for urinating. If you had to do the other, you had to let the steward know so they could make other arrangements. When we arrived to our hotel we showered, rested a bit and then had a tour of the city. Arequipa is situated near 3 volcanoes: Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu. Some have snow on the top. Arequipa is built almost...

Nov 6, 2011 - Arequipa

Nov 6 Arequipa Took the overnight bus from Nazca to Arequipa and arrived at 7am. Went to our nice hotel and washed clothes in the sink. Tried out Skype for the first time and woke Rae up at 6:30am or so on a Sunday! Good thing she was glad to hear from us. lol!! Went out for a Peruvian lunch. Had Checherron which is a big piece of dried pork, kinda like dry pork ribs, with salted onions, a boiled potato, and corn nuts (not like food at home but was good). These two plates plus two beers cost about $7! Then we got picked up at our hotel for...

Peru 2011

Sep 26, 2011 - Back at altitude, surrounded by volcanoes.

Arequipa 26/09/11 Back at altitude, surrounded by volcanoes. We spent the rest of the evening in Nazca waiting for the night bus to Arequipa. Arequipa is set around the Plaza Del Armas with many cobbled streets leading from the Plaza and tourist shops. We visited an Alpaca museum which told you about the different types of animals found in the high Andean Plato, and the different uses of their fleeces, the grading and finally the weaving. We booked on to a Colca Canyon tour to visit the Condors and see the canyon. The tour started at 3am....

Jun 8, 2011 - Birdwatching in the Colca Canyon

I have to admit, I wasn´t overly excited at the prospect of spending an entire day birdwatching in the Canyon. However, I was pleasantly surprised and it was actually quite fun. The main bird that we were looking out for was the Condor, which is one of Peru´s protected species. We were lucky enough to see a lot of them and up close they are extremely impressive. Their average wing span is ten feet and when they soar above your head, they look absolutely gigantic. In the evening, we went to the most hilarious restaurant where they perform...

Jun 7, 2011 - Colca Canyon

At 7.00am, we embarked on a five hour bus journey to the Colca Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world. Our tour guide told us that had Peru had enough money to promote it, the Colca Canyon would probably replace the Grand Canyon as one of the natural wonders of the world. It certainly was beautiful, although Brayden had a bad experience with it when he dropped his camera right into its midst. In the afternoon, I did yet another optional walk up a mountain (why do I do this to myself?) in order to visit a pre-Inca cemetery. As per...

Jun 6, 2011 - Arequipa

We arrived in Arequipa at 6.00am and I went straight to bed. I could have spent all morning sleeping, however, I begrudgingly awoke again at 8.00am in order to explore the city. After a subway-style breakfast, we all went to look around the Monasterio de Santa Catalina. The convent was founded in 1580 for the daughters of upper-class Spanish families and has been in active use ever since. The convent is huge (20,000 sq metres) and there are numerous bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms and chapels. Additionally, there is a bathing house, an...

Apr 12, 2011 - Peru: Arequipa & Colca Canyon

AREQUIPA & COLCA CANYON After the high of Salkantay and Machu Picchu we arrived in Arequipa not quite knowing what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised however with the town and the beautiful surroundings. Snow capped mountains surround the city and can be seen at every glance. Our bus arrived at 7.00am so we had plenty of time to choose the right hostel. After checking out a few we decided on Los Andes Bed and Breakfast. Once showered and semi unpacked the 3 of us (me, Jul and Jul’s hair) went for a walk to explore the city. 10 minutes...

Jan 11, 2011 - Arequipa

No planned activities today so just looked around the town of Arequipa. The 10 hour bus ride here last night was suprisingly comfortable! We didnt do very much today, looked at the market and inside the Cathedral. Simon had Alpaca steak for dinner which is yummy, it tastes a bit like beef.
