Jul 23, 2011 - Stavanger, Norway
Stavanger (pronounced Sta VANG er) is the fourth largest city in Norway with a population of just under 100,000. It is Norway's oil capital. But during the 17th and 18th centuries Stavanger was a commercial center where the fishing and shipping industries flourished. In the 19th century Stavanger was the sardine capital of the world. The old-world charm of Stavanger is well-preserved in its old town. First a cloudy and sometimes rainy and later sunny day. We went into Stavanger and walked around. We bought tickets for the 10:30 Lysefjord...

Feb 6, 2010 - Stavanger..cute and small
Luckily the sun wakes up at some decent time here compared to Iceland. At about 0730, you can already see the sun starting to rise. Today's temperature was about 2 deg. The city looks totally different compared to last night. After a simple Scandinavian breakfast which had the nice sweet "Brown" cheese, it was time to explore the city. Stavanger is a compact city with a nice harbor and usually also the base to begin exploring some of the beautiful fjords in the area. One of the famous fjord is the Lysefjord. Too bad during winter, there is...

Feb 5, 2010 - Returning to Norway
Left this evening to Stavanger via Oslo to continue my RTW ticket from Oslo back to Amsterdam on Sunday. My flight today to Oslo is with SAS leaving at 1855 as SK828. The flight left 5 mins early due to the low load and directly speeding down the runway resulting in me arriving more than 30 mins earlier in Oslo. Tried to get into the SAS lounge in the International section, but sadly it was already closed. Oslo airport is nearly a dead airport in the International section by 2100 hrs! Transferred to the Domestic terminal after going...

Jul 10, 2008 - Stavanger, Norway
July 10th Went into Stavanger where we walked around the shopping district (beautifully colored buildings, antique lamp posts with hanging flower baskets) and made our way to the petroleum museum. We all had a blast, especially the kids. The museum chronicles life on an oil rig and different aspects of the petroleum industry (the main industry of the city). Highlights included a 3 d film, a catastrophe room, where we had to find our way out in the dark with orders and announcements being barked in Norwegian. Noah and I were able to get out...

Jun 19, 2007 - Day 19 - Stavanger
Stavanger's main industries are fishing and offshore oil and gas. An early start and we are off on a tour called a "Taste of Norway". We travel through the lowlands of the Hauren region. Plenty of small farms. Highly subsidized apparently and most have the old small farm house with a mansion next to it. We visit a museum / cultural centre. Norway had been occupied by invasion forces from Germany and Russia in the past. We see old bronze age graves, learn a bit about the Vikings, unification of Norway by Harry the Fairhair, then travel to...
