May 14, 2011 - Nicaragua - Esteli

We had a bit of a rough time yesterday as all our buses took twice as long as suggested (4 hours spent on a 2 hour trip being the longest, with others). We met the same israeli lady on one of the buses again, more coincidence, we are convinced we are going to see her again. We ended up in Tegucigalpa which was not a nice place. The guide told us not to stay long and the people were telling us "don't stay here, its bad." With no organized bus station we ended up in a taxi who knew where the bus to get out of there was. So we spent a quick...

Jan 25, 2009 - Masaya to Esteli, Nicaragua

Once again we adopted a leisurely pace getting on the road about 10:00 AM. The plan for today was to visit the Parque National Volcan Masaya, a few miles from town. Afterwards we would head towards Esteli, a town located near enough to the Honduran Border to make crossing the next day before noon fairly easy. We had no trouble finding the park entrance and the fee was reasonable at about $3.50 each. As you ride the paved road towards the smoking volcano you are crossing a lava field although it is quite old (about 1600 AD I believe) and...

Jun 15, 2008 - Esteli

The scene of fierce fighting during the 1979 Sandinista Revolution, much of the city was destroyed by indiscriminate bombing by the Somoza regime. As a consequence there is little of architectural interest but today Esteli is a bustling, friendly town dotted with colourful murals. We visited the Museum of Heroes and Martyrs run by the mothers of those killed during the Revolution and subsequent Contra conflict. Photos of those killed line the walls along with newspaper clippings, handwritten accounts and poems - a moving tribute. The...
