Oct 23, 2007 - Wanaka, New Zealand

Drive to Wanaka..... A driving day with many stops for sightseeing. First stop was Arrowtown, an old gold mining camp, now mostly tourist trap. Next to it was the Chinese settlement. It was interesting to read about the history of the Chinese in New Zealand. Then we went to the place where there was bungy jumping. Many of the group signed up at $180 a jump plus more for video or pictures. One lady in our group was 71 years old and has grey hair, she actually looks more like 90. She jumped and the Japaneese tourists went crazy getting...

Aug 24, 2007 - A short stop in Wanaka

The drive from the Haast pass to Wanaka was very different. The scenery was more dramatic and the mountains easier to see because we had lost the forests on the mountains through which we had been driving alot of the time. The mountains were now either bare rock or very low shrubs and different colours and types of grasses. It was very windy driving south along the shores of Lake Wanaka but to reach Wanaka itself you had to cross to another lake (Lake Hawea) half way down to avoid some steep mountains and this lake was amazingly sheltered...

We left Franz Josef really early in the morning for Wanaka, a small ski resort town. On the way we stopped at Lake Matheson where we were supposed to do a hike and get some of the best photos of the mountains but it was pouring rain so we didn't get to see anything. We also somehow ended up leaving one of our passengers at the cafe!! haha Poor John, came out of the bathroom and the big green bus was gone!! He had to jump on one of the other tour buses to catch up with us. The funniest part about it was that we left him around 9am and nobody...

Jul 10, 2007 - It's all action in New Zealand

So the further South we travel the better the scenery and the drive in to River Valley was the best yet and to be honest it's too hard to describe in words, but it was just really dramatic and amazingly green!! ... have a few photo's. In fact on that note it can be slightly frustrating at times, not a big deal but you drive pass such amazing landscapes, etc that you really want to stop and at least take a photo. But never mind. So late afternoon in River valley, we all check in to the cheapest dorm which is essentially 1 massive bunk bed,...
