Oct 31, 2017 - Hobbiton
Our day began with a journey around Auckland, like any city this included traffic congestion. Most of our time was spent at the wharf area, where there have been a lot of changes over the year. After a quick stop for tea and the toilet, a comfort stop be we’re on our way to make dale earth. Hobbiton is definitely off the beaten path, it really is amazing they ever found this exact spot for the movies. The whole place and tourist business is owned and operated by the farmer, sheep farmer whose farm the site was built on. They see between...Jump to full entry
Sep 12, 2017 - Let's visit the Hobbits!
My Trip Journal update - 12 Sep We left the Taupo region today for a very special visit to Hobbiton, but first we called in on a famous local craft shop, Lava Glass. The products we saw were exquisite and generally inspired by the local area, such as Lake Taupo and the mountains. We were treated to a very good description by Liz? And, of course, bought a piece! At least we don't have to cart it around NZ as they will ship it back to Australia for us. They also have glass blowing demos and a beautiful glass sculpture garden which,...Jump to full entry
Jul 13, 2017 - The Lord of the Rings
Today we arrived in a random town called Matamata which has a huge population of around 2000 people. The main (and only) reason for coming here is to visit Hobbiton where part of The Lord of the Rings was filmed (it's where the Hobbits live!). Our three hour guided tour took us to visit some of the tiny houses which were constructed during the making of the films and also a visit to the Green Dragon Inn pub which featured in both Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Part of the package included a beer especially brewed for the pub which you...Jump to full entry
Apr 11, 2017 - Hobbiton & Beyond!
I had a busy, thoroughly enjoyable weekend this weekend. Decided that, as I have spent most of my weekends exploring a little further afield, i'd devote a bit of time to Tauranga this weekend so I spent Saturday wandering around a street art festival in the town centre before treating myself to lunch on the waterfront and ending the day reading my book and snoozing on the beach by the mount. Sunday, by comparison, was a much more active day! Decided to bite the bullet and buy into a tourist trap - Hobbiton in Matamata. I'm not the biggest...Jump to full entry
Jan 4, 2017 - Matamata and Hobbiton
Rotorua-Matemata Wed 4th Jan. 7-21°C cloudy/sunny Lot cooler this morning, still some rain about. Had breakfast at Capers on Eruera St, really nice cafe with lots of choices for breakfast and good coffee. Bit pricier but worth it. http://www.capers.co.nz/ Drove towards Matamata on SH5, 28 and 24, a lovely drive on good roads in the countryside. We made a side trip via SH29 through Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park to McLaren Falls. Climbing the pass from Waikato side, 4.7km from the turnoff on the left is a lookout with panoramic views of the...Jump to full entry
Jan 12, 2015 - Hobbiton!
Before we left the North Island, I told Fran there were two sights I simply MUST see in New Zealand and we might as well do them now rather than make me wait until later! The two sights are, you guessed it, Hobbiton and Waitomo Glowworm Caves. The in-flight safety video had gotten me all excited about those Hobbits, as they used the characters in a very humorous way to convey the safety information. After all of our travels, I can honestly say it was the most entertaining safety video ever. Hooray for Frodo! We stayed in an airbnb about...Jump to full entry
Mar 7, 2014 - Hobbiton
We are off to Matamata to tour Hobbiton. Once again we are driving through deep valleys created by the Waikato River. The roads are steep and windy. During our journey we drove through the Fitzgerald Glade Rainforest. Lots of tree ferns. The trees' canopy created a greenery tunnel that we drove through. The trees were very tall and very close to the road. In fact, there really wasn't a shoulder to the road. We made a short stop at Tirau once again. This time to send a March Dance Video to Erin. As we were driving to Matamata, we could see...Jump to full entry

Jun 23, 2013 - Drive from Auckland to Rotorua via Matamata
Today was so totally fun and memorable. Starting out in Auckland, we drove to Matamata and got our first New Zealand cache along the way. In Matamata, we took back roads to a farm where 'The Hobbit' was filmed. We drove through beautiful, rolling grassy hills and meadows filled with sheep and dairy cows. Later we learned that the farmer who owned "Hobbiton" was sitting watching a rugby game when the film crew knocked on his door. He couldn't be interrupted so he just told them to go look around. When they came back and asked him if they...Jump to full entry
Mar 24, 2013 - Where the Hobbits live
After a long roundabout drive over hill and dale we finally made it to Hobbiton. We were told that the GPS does not give the most direct route - an understatement! We were wondering if we would ever get there. Most roads in New Zealand are 2 lanes and since it is so hilly it takes longer than expected to get everywhere but it is very pretty. Although we are not big Lord of the Rings / Hobbit fans we all found it very interesting. The New Zealand army was contracted to build the 1.5 km road in to the film site & the initial earthworks. The...Jump to full entry
Oct 22, 2011 - How did I lose!!!!
After a fairly busy 2 days we did not rush too much this morning. The original plan was to go see Hobbitton. However they are busy filming the Hobbit at the moment so it is closed until 4 Nov. We were quite bummed but Colin and Heidi told us apparently the houses are merely doors in the hill and you cant actually go inside as that part is just a set. Still bummed but eased the disappointment. Instead we went and saw Colin & Heidi's school in Mata Mata where they teach. It is a very cool school with very impressive facilities. We then went...Jump to full entry
Aug 9, 2008 - Lord of the rings relive
