Jan 8, 2007 - Franz Josef & Glacier Walking!
.....Up early on our first day (6th Jan) and went to get the Campervan, our "home" for the next week! Then we set off for the supermarket to stock up on groceries and headed off to Franz Josef Glacier (about 6 hours away) which was on the western coast. After some initial getting used to the van, we set off via such places as Sheffield (!!!), Athurs Pass (stunning...snow topped mountains and stunning lakes), Greymouth and then headed south towards Franz Josef passing through Hokitika and a small gold mining town called Ross before getting...Jump to full entry
Nov 30, 2006 - hunting for greenstone
It rained rained and rained some more. our campsite was flooded out for tonight so we get to stay in a yha bliss. We woke up to snow over the the trees even in the valleys who says its summer in nz felt very christmasy. I went green stone hunting on a stunning beach and found a little piece and got bitten to shreds by sand flies not so cool. Then the sun came out and the west coast revieled her beauty so cycling was bliss.Jump to full entry
Apr 20, 2006 - Frans Josef and Foxes Glacier mints
Pit stopped for the night at Wanaka and slept like a dead man then back in the saddle over to the west coast and north to the other side of the Cook ranges to the land of the glaciers. First was Foxes that looked like it was a giant white slug creeping down the valley same as the larger Frans Josef 20k up the road. So as our sky dive had been cancelled due to crap weather and being totally skint we just decided to investigate the 'terminal faces ' close up. This is the parts roped off from the public right at the front that are really...Jump to full entry
Jan 23, 2006 - Fox Glacier
The day dawned bright so without having anything to eat we drove straight to Lake Matheson, this time walking right around the lake to the different viewpoints. From there there were spectacular views across the water to Mount Tasman and Mount Cook and the surrounding range. At first there were clouds covering the mountains but after we had waited for a few minutes they cleared away and we were very happy with the clear views of the snow-covered mountains against the blue sky and the reflections in the lake. After breakfast back at the...Jump to full entry
Jan 8, 2006 - Fox Glacier
Had a coffee in a nice little cafe to perk us up for the morning before again stuggling to find anywhere to stay at Fox. Eventually a caravan/motor holiday park had little cabins availible which gave us the chance to dry our tent and sleeping bags out from the previous nights downpour. Took a walk to the face of the Fox glacier but could not right up to it as you needed a guide to take you beyond the ropes, we saw this for the tourist scam it was and just zoomed the camera in for good photos. Heard and saw rocks falling from the mountain...Jump to full entry
Feb 26, 2005 - Franz Josef glacier.
With a feeling of intrepidation we checked in at Franz Josef Glacier guide reception to be kitted out in all the gear for the Glacier climb(suprisingly, flip flops were not appropriate footwear). The boots we picked were heavier than iron anvils and the ice "talonz" which we would need for ice climbing resembled the parts from a 1980's mechanno set. Take it as read that everything else we were given had been worn by some sweaty european traveller climbing mountains for 8 hours. Looking like a school field trip with everyone dressed in...Jump to full entry
