Mar 6, 2005 - Hanmer Springs
Feb 12, 2005 - Hanmer Springs
We've now completed a full circuit of South Island but need to get up to Picton to catch the ferry to the North Island. So we bypass Christchurch and head for the thermal resort of Hanmer Springs high in the hills above the Waipara wine region. The focus of the town is the Thernal Reserve where spring water comes out of the ground at high temperatures and slightly sulphurous. We feel obliged to take a dip but in all honesty it's pretty tedious sitting in a bath that never goes cold - especially with a bunch of other people ! But it must be...Jump to full entry
Jan 18, 2005 - Through the Rainbow and into Hanmer Springs!
Woke up early that morning and had a break"fast".(get it fast brekie). Any way, we drove on the tarseal for a while and played games until we got to the (gravel)rougher roads. There were heaps off "cattle stops!" and "FORDS!" It was real fun vibrating over cattle stops and splashing through fords. There were heaps of freezing clear rivers including Cold Water river, which was where we had lunch. Finally we made our way off the bumpy roads and headed into Hanmer Springs. We found a cosy little camp site to stay at. We splashed around in...Jump to full entry
Apr 5, 2004 - Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve
Deciding that some serious relaxation was in order, we drove an hour and a half north to Hamner Springs Thermal Reserve. It is the main thermal resort on the south island and we had some vouchers to use. The weather was excellent, gorgeous views of the mountains and thermal water to ease into. Our vouchers got us an upgrade to a private steam bath suite for half an hour. A few hours later we drove onwards/northwards to Kaikoura for a spot of whalewatching. Sulphur solid.Jump to full entry
Mar 25, 2004 - To Hanmer Springs.
Garry got up early to watch the Arsenal vs Chelsea game before we were on our way to Hanmer Springs. We weren't particularly sorry to say goodbye to Greymouth, although the hostel was a good one, Noahs Ark backpackers, and we had the Zebra room! The drive was a good one, but we are getting used to this now. Hanmer is a popular tourist spot for people in New Zealand and it is a really picturesque town. Once we had settled in we went for a walk up Conical Hill which gave excellent views over the town and the surrounding mountains and...Jump to full entry
