Sep 23, 2017 - The Haast Pass Road Trip

We had another long driving day, today, turning a 5 hour drive from FJG to Queenstown, via the Haast Pass, into a 10 hour spectacular, despite the rain that persisted for much of the drive. For this update, I'll let the pictures tell the story (when I get around to posting them 𯘏); suffice to say that we stopped in several beautiful spots and went on a couple of short hikes. Perhaps the best of them was to Blue Pools. We also had to make a decision on whether to take the scary Crown Range road, the highest public road in NZ, or the low...

Sep 22, 2017 - Let's go SKIing - our kids won't mind!

Today was the day for the big SKI trip! The day dawned with clear skies and sunshine, so we were full of anticipation for our helicopter flight later on. After breakfast, we made our scheduled status call to the helicopter company, only to have our anticipation converted to frustration. They were now saying that we were on standby and that we would only be able to go if the other four passengers were within the weight limits for the six-seat Squirrel helicopter; otherwise, these people would be taken on the four-seat Hughes 500 and we would...

Sep 21, 2017 - A few short hikes

The promised rain arrived during the evening and continued into the morning, meaning we were in no hurry to get out; however, we did have a phone call to make to the helicopter company. I ended up speaking to the owner/pilot who confirmed we would be on the flight tomorrow, subject to the forecast good weather eventuating. Good news! The limited indoor options in FJG meant stay in the apartment or chance the rain on another hike. We chose the latter. The Franz Josef Glacier Valley is, below the glacier, essentially in two parts. The lowest...

Sep 20, 2017 - Reflections

If you read yesterday’s entries, you will know that we managed to turn a 5 hour drive into a ten hour epic, which is normal for us - we just stop so often and take copious photos! We don’t mind that, of course, but it does mean that we pay the price from time to time. Today, that price was to sleep in and not get to Lake Matheson for the famed early morning stillness and reflections of Mount Cook. After breakfast, we headed down to Fox Glacier and Lake M - about a 40 minute drive - and set off on the Lake Matheson Walk. It should actually...

Sep 19, 2017 - ...and down the coast.

Part 2... Just after leaving Death’s Corner, the clouds parted and gave way to beautiful blue skies, just in time to reveal numerous snow-capped mountains. We pulled off into a lay-by to take some pictures and have lunch, while enjoying the views we did not expect when we left rainy Christchurch. The rest of the drive down to the coast was just one Kodak moment after another and we made several stops just to admire the scenery. At Kumara Junction, we turned South and made our way to Hokitika. There we made a planned detour to visit the...

Jul 4, 2016 - Bloody Weather - Franz Joseph

Woke to a beautifully fine morning. Blue skies everywhere, so today is our day to do the Heli Hike...That is until we saw the mountain...The blue sky was everywhere, except over the mountain, where we need it to be. The morning tour was cancelled, but everyone was hanging onto hope that the clouds would lift in time for the afternoon tour to go ahead. Another quietish morning before heading out to get a 'Jimmy's' pie for lunch (famous in New Zealand apparently) & see how we are looking for our afternoon tour. Still unsure, as it is very...

Jul 3, 2016 - Still in Franz Joseph

What an awful night last night. It started raining about 6.00 & did not stop until after 9.00 this morning. When I say it did not stop raining I mean it did not stop at all...Not like at home where it might rain for an hour then stop for a bit before starting up again. This was ALL though the night. Very difficult to sleep, as the sound is amplified on the campervan... This was not good news as were were again booked to do the Heli Hike today. Rang them & yes it has been cancelled again. Not to worry, as yesterday we found out through the...

Jul 2, 2016 - Franz Joseph

Loving the amount of sleep we are able to get in New Zealand. It is dark very early, so the boys are not complaining about going to bed reasonably early. Last night it was 7.45. The mornings are also very dark. It is just starting to get light in the van at 8.30, so we are all enjoying a sleep in aswell... This morning we woke to drizzling rain...Not a good sign as we are due to go on the Heli Hike today. Went down & spoke to them & the Heli Hike has been cancelled (as we expected...) so we rescheduled for tomorrow...Fingers Crossed the...

Jul 1, 2016 - Hanmer Springs to Franz Joseph Glacier

Woke to a very cold morning. The grass was white from frost, but the sky was nice & clear, hence the cold temperature. Got on the road about 9.30 to make our way to Franz Joseph Glacier. Today is our biggest driving day with us travelling approx 390km. This not like driving at home, were this would take about 4 hours... We stopped briefly at Hokitika. Fay this is where we got the penguins for you last time. They have an amazing glass figurine/bowl/ormanents etc shop here. We had to make a purchase to support the local community, so I...

Dec 10, 2015 - Over the NZ Alps to Greymouth, Pancake Rocks, Glaciers

We caught the TranzAlpine train in the morning and took the 4 hour ride up and over the NZ Southern Alps. As the day was cloudy and rainy, some of the views were obscured-but I still got some pictures. What was amazing to me where all the Lupin along the tracks - the purple and blue against the mountains was beautiful. Once in Greymouth, we picked up our next rental car and drove up the coast to see the Pancake Rocks. Still quite rainy, but we ventured out onto the boardwalk and were rewarded with spectacular views of these pancake looking...

May 22, 2014 - Franz Josef

Day 14 Distance: 71 Total: 2896 Campground: Top 10 Fox Glacier We had somewhat of a late start this morning, but not much driving planned for today. Our first stop was Lake Matheson for a scenic walk through the forest to an alpine lake. Following our walk, there was a stop at Lake Matheson Café for our morning coffee, and with mostly cloudy skies, we hit the road to Franz Josef. At Franz Josef, we took the access road to the car park at the glacier access point. The walk to the glacier was about 1.8 miles and much easier than the walk to...
