Apr 12, 2009 - Coromandel

The days are going to get a bit mixed up as I drove to Coromandel from Auckland and spent the day there before camping and setting off early the next day this is pretty much how the rest of my journal goes also. So Coromandel what is there - well beautiful coast lines Cathedral Cove and Hanei Beach via Thames. I missed out on Kayaking to the Cove so I set off on foot and was rewarded with some spectacular views. As the sun was setting it was a rush to get to my first campsite on the other side of the Peninsula. At one point I thought I...

Mar 29, 2009 - Auckland and Coromandel Penninsula

Flew up to Auckland from Wellington and rented a car to go to Rosemary's Christening. Beautiful celebration with Gerard and Mia's families. After a couple of days in Auckland, we drove out to the Coromandel Penninsula for a few days before driving back to Wellington. The Coromandel is beautiful. Sea views from the road circumnavigating the penninsula are fantastic and this region is famous for coastal walks, hot water beaches, homegrown cheese, seafood, etc. Pretty much a paradise. A great way to relax and since it is off-season now, we...

Jan 25, 2009 - Hot Foot To Hahei But The Wet Road To Cathedral Cove

What an outstanding day !. We set off from Pauinui this morning and headed for Hot Water Beach where the hot geothermal springs come closer to the surface on the beach and enticing the locals to get out shovels to dig pits in the sand, fill them with water and settle in (so we thought) for a warm bath. Now we have all experienced that walking on hot sand sensation - but we were not prepared for the truly HOT sand in places at Hot Water beach leaving us running into the sea in this beautiful cove and thinking about literally hot footing it...

Jan 24, 2009 - Kauri On Up The Coromandel

This afternoon, we got the walking shoes on and headed just outside Coromandel Town to the Kauri Block walk – up into the pine and kauri covered hills for views down over Coromandel Bay and harbour and the local oyster beds. The waters were clear and perfectly still and yet another hue of turquoise – Dulux should take a trip out here and give us 35 different shades of aquamarine to grace our bathrooms! As we neared the end of our walk, we were rewarded with the sight of a Pohutakawa tree still with its last few red flowers on. After our...

Jan 21, 2009 - Coromandel

No loitering in the morning, up and out as we wanted to get up to Coromandel town on the opposite side of the Coromandel Peninsula. We stopped at Hahei, a little further up from Waihi, at Hot Pool Beach. When the tide goes out from this beach, you can hire big spades and dig down to the thermal water, and make your own little bath to sit in. Unfortunately the tide was on its way in when we arrived, but Martin managed to blag his way into another family’s hot pool and sat with them until the waves came over the top. There was a little bit...

Sep 19, 2008 - We've Arrived!

We've arrived! After about 31 hours of travel, we are finally in Auckland, New Zealand. Our departure from Heathrow was delayed by 2 hours because of an 'error by operations staff' who allowed some bags to be checked onto the flight without their owner. The error was only discovered after the half hour taxi from the terminal to the runway. Needless to say we had to turn around and come back, remove the bags, refuel and re-taxi. The whole saga took 2 hours. We made up a bit of time between Heathrow and LAX and a little bit more in the...

Jul 10, 2008 - Waihi Beach to Colville Bay North Island 22 to24 June 2008

Jeff Today’s journey is to travel 65 miles up the west coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. We took the back roads to the west of Waihi and joined the main road 10 mile above Waihi. The day is another one of winds and showers for us and snow on ski fields of the north and south islands. Despite the weather the views were worth seeing as we once more traveled up and down high hills and round many bends. At the motorhome rally most vans were named and it was enjoyable reading them. My favorite was ‘Sleeping Around’ and I thought we should now...

Nov 12, 2007 - Cycle Coromandel Coast

Starting in Thames, we cycle to the town of Coromandel for lunch, then continue on to Black Jack's Backpacker Lodge for the night. I think it was our toughtest day yet (I needed a recovery ride), as we began loaded touring. We were both carrying 12 to 15 pounds (did not have a scale to weigh), and had very steep long climbs. All the cyclists we met kept saying, "the Coromandel, it is hully over there"...that is how they say "hilly", I could not understand them at first. Carl and Carol at BlackJack's are simply amazing. Carl grills us fresh...

Dec 25, 2006 - Kenzy's Trip and All About It

Hello again! We made it to Coromandel two days ago, or in New Zealand, Christmas Eve. It was kind of hard to believe it was Christmas Eve with no snow, no lights... just plain old New Zealand. We got to our camper park around noon, and half an hour later we were settled. Trout and I went down to the beach with mom to find a Christmas Tree. All we could find was bamboo, so we took a little bamboo branch and put it in a pot of sand. We decorated it with shells and put the presents underneath. We hung our stockings up too. For dinner we had...

Dec 8, 2006 - Coromandel

Friday 8th December Up at 4am for the ferry to Wellington. Tried to sleep but it just wasn't happening so got a $10 ticket to the cinema which was showing "A Good Year" with Russel Crowe. Drove up from Wellington through Tongiraro National Park and Rotorua. The rain just didn't let up all day and I kept on driving hoping it would be better in the north. Ended up in Mount Maunganui where I camped for the night. Saturday 9th December Day started off pretty sunny. Drove up into the Coromandel to Hot Water beach but by this point the rain had...

Oct 16, 2006 - Coromandel Peninsula

I awoke this morning to the sound of rain. Heavy rain. Really heavy rain. I didn't like the sound of it, so turned my electric underblanket up to 3 (really must get one of thees at home) and curled back up. I was forced up at 8am knowing I needed to do something with my hair before I ventured out to breakfast which I had asked for at 8:30am. Breakfast was good - a really nice cooked one which was spent trying to stop Emma the Jack Russell from jumping up and taking it. I let her have some toast, but that was it. I packed up some things and...

Mar 25, 2006 - Getting Lost In "the Coromandels"

With newfound confidence in my ability to get a ride (I had luckily already scored a lift from the center of town to the outskirts......where there isn't much around other than the road that I was standing on.) I had the assumption that it wouldn't be too long before a sympathetic driver would pull over to offer me a lift up North. Hence, I was a little surprised that after an hour, I was still on the side of the road with my thumb out. With my look of enthusiasm now turned slightly towards one of begging and the realisation that this was...
