Hello all, Clyde and Cromwell were a couple of towns on route from Dunedin to Queenstown. We went cross-country via Middlemarch "Lord of the Rings territory," stunning. However, everywhere since seems to be labled as "Lord of the Rings territory." To be honest you can't go wrong on NZ, you jut need a map and point your van. You'll see amazing countryside and be rubber-necking natural site of beatuty and wonders of nature every 10 minutes. You really do have to resist the need to stop otherwise you'll never get to wherer you plan to go. So...Jump to full entry
Nov 26, 2009 - Central Otago Rail Trail
As promised, this blog is about my adventures on the Central Otago Rail Trail. This is a 150km section of the old railway line between Dunedin and Cromwell in the middle of the south island. Built in the early 1900's, the line was used to service the local sheep farms and various small mining communities but in the 1990 the line was closed down as it was considered uneconomic, which had a devastating effect on the local communities, most of which are villages with less than 1000 people. Feb 11, 2008 - Naseby to Clyde South Island 29th to 30th January 2008.
Sylvia’s Comments Whist we were visiting the information centre, in Ranfurly, the lady working there had told me that the nicest section of the rail trail was from Oturehua to Lauder. The trail went through the Poolburn Gorge, over two viaducts and through two tunnels. So forgetting the pain of the last ride I decided to ride this section. Leaving our overnight camp area we retraced our route back to the SH 85 and headed for Ida Burn where we turned off on to a small road which would take us to the start of this segment.
