We decided to make the journey north on one go so Sunday was spent travelling right to Havelock which is just a few miles from the Picton Ferry. Stopped off for green lipped mussels once we got north of Christchurch and saw the seals again near Kaikoura. ... We free camped last night by a great river, was warm for a change. Arrived in Christchurch a great little city and found the library so we could get updated on everything. ... Well I have arrived in New Zealand and I immediately had an eventful start as I was initially refused entry to the country !! The reason being that I did not have a flight out of the country ! Fortunately, everybody was very relaxed about it and after twenty minutes on the internet, booking a flight to Melbourne in January, everything was fine and they finally let me in. Christchurch is a pretty relaxed city in block form with everything centred around the Cathedral in the centre of town. ... Wednesday 21st October 2009 The flight to Christchurch is only 1hr 20 mins and we do get a little snack (a small packet of crisps, a biscuit – or ‘lollies’ – the NZ/Oz name for sweeties! – But no drink – even if you want to pay for it! Our bags arrive safely and we are soon on the phone to the camper company to come and pick us up – but the phone is crap (lots of feedback) and the girl at the other end was whispering into the phone. ... However, we asked an airport official and we were told “through the tunnel turn right then left” – so off we trotted past heaps of building work and found ourselves outside the international terminal with no signs to guide us – and no sign of a bus either.Christchurch and points South. ...
