Jan 31, 2013 - Loop around the South Island
In order to see the South Island we decided to actually rent a car. There were several areas of consideration, such as driving on the "WRONG" side of the street, insurance (drivers in New Zealand are not required to carry car insurance). Only rentals need to be insured or otherwise provide a $2500 or more bond... And having to focus on the road instead of sightseeing, etc. Anyway, since there were a lot more places to visit than could reasonably be done by bus, we went ahead and rented a car, much encouraged by my friend Rosemarie who...

Mar 5, 2012 - Arthurs Pass via Moana
Reefton. Slow start, * but Phil had to empty the grey waste water and the toilet tank and fill up the water tank today, so by the time we got away after filling up the fridge, we had done a fair bit. I drove to Moana, where we took photos under the sign. We stopped for lunch and a beautiful walk along the Arnold River that flows into Brunner Lake. We learned about the Rimer or red pine. A freaky pine tree that looks a little like a sheoak. Both Rimer and Arnold on the same sign Jason!! A huge lake surrounded by huge mountains. They were...

Apr 30, 2011 - Arthur's Pass and back to Christchurch
Once again we had perfect weather as we took Arthur’s Pass to head across the island and back to Christchurch. Its all high mountains with large scree slopes, steep gorges and wide braided rivers, straddling the main divide – the ‘back bone’ of the South Island – between Canterbury and the West Coast.

Apr 20, 2011 - Christchurch - some background
On the 22nd February a magnitude-6.3 earthquake struck the Canterbury region in New Zealand's South Island at 12:51 pm causing widespread damage and multiple fatalities. The earthquake was centred 10 kilometres south-east of the centre of Christchurch, New Zealand's second-most populous city. It followed nearly six months after the 7.1 magnitude 2010 Canterbury earthquake that caused significant damage to the region but no direct fatalities. The names of 172 victims have been released as of 7 April 2011, with the final death toll expected...

Jan 2, 2010 - Posh Pack-up at the Pass
After an effortless transfer from Auckland to my enormous suite at the Camelot Hotel (it is bigger than the downstairs of my house!), it was time to get down to some proper 'tramping'. It was another early start for my day trip to Arthur's Pass and I was met by Andrew, the guide, at 7.30. There were just 3 of us on the trip - myself and a Japanese couple who didn't speak a word of English. Luckily Andrew spoke fluent Japanese. When we picked Tomiko and Manabu up from their hotel I felt rather smug in my usual walking gear as Tomiko appeared...

Mar 27, 2008 - Mountain Drive
We spent the day driving through Arthur's Pass, which is a scenic drive through the mountains. It was different than what we were expecting, which was more like Colorado. However, we drove through the valleys of the various mountains and not to the higher altitudes. We were hoping for snow, but unfortunately, there wasn't any. It was still a really nice drive and good scenary. We went hiking to the waterfall once we were in the park. It was a deceiving little hike. Only 30 minutes, but almost straight up. We walked up and down 20 flights of...

Mar 4, 2008 - Christchurch to Arthurs Pass to Oxford South Island 22 and 23 February 2008
Jeff After reclaiming our van and conversing with the Jayco Dealer and his wife, (lovely helpful people), we set off to drive the 90 or so miles to Arthurs Pass, the first 30 of which was through the plains of Canterbury. Once we reached Waddington along the SH 73 we were soon passing the Russell Range of hills on our left and other hills to our right. It was a thrill to be amongst the hills and heading for the mountains again. Eventually after a hairpin bend we were climbing high along the winding road which was clinging to the hill side....

Jan 26, 2006 - Arthur's Pass
After leaving Christchurch we had to get over to the West side of the Island and decided to take the scenic route cross-country and through the Mountains. I was told that this is one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand.....I agree. It was absolutely beautiful all the way along. we stopped numerous times to admire the views and stretch our legs. Mountains each side of you, lots of little creeks and streams and ice-capped Mountains peaking over the top of the green mountains - totally breath-taking!
