Apr 4, 2005 - Fox Glacier, Haast Pass en Wanaka

Weer kloten geslapen! Om 02:45 gaat er in het dorp een sirene af. Zo'n eerste-maandag-van-de-maand-alarm bij ons in NL. En dan 5 minuten lang! Nou en dan de slaap weer vatten.... 's Morgens vraag ik de beheerder van de camping waar dat voor was/is. Och, waarschijnlijk een brandje of een auto-ongeluk... Moeten ze daar de hele gemeenschap, inclusief toeristen voor wekken?? We gaan op tijd (09:00) rijden. We hebben een lange rit gepland en het weer lijkt niet al te best. We rijden niet naar Lake Matherson, het is te bewolkt. We pakken nog wek...

Mar 27, 2005 - Day 23

At last, some fine weather after two rather dull and wet days. As you can guess it was another early start. Our journey continued northwards towards Wanaka. We decided to take a sllightly different road to this town using a high mountain pass (Crown Range Road)with VERY tight bends! What a fantastic view we had when the summit was reached - we also had the benefit of cloudless skies and warm weather. Arrival at the campsite in Wanaka was a little earlier than normal. We were given one of the best plots on the site overlooking Lake Wanaka...

Dec 16, 2003 - Otago: Wanaka

We drove on to the adjacent Fox Glacier in the morning but we didn't venture very far - it didn't look as impressive as the Franz Josef and we were too tired to do anything strenuous today. As it was we pushed on down the West Coast and back through the Haast pass until we reached Wanaka. Just before we got there we stopped at the quite interesting "Stuart Landsborough's Puzzling World" - a collection of optical illusions and puzzles, including a large maze that Kate and I got lost in for an hour (of course Kate was much faster getting...
