Nov 3, 2016 - Návštěva nemocnice

Kole‎no v noci boli, ale rano bolest ustupuje. Nicmene nemuzu poradne chodit. Musim si davat navic strasne pozor, abych pravou nohou nezakopl o zadny kamen, jelikoz to pekelne boli. Casem navic mi dochazi i fyzicke sily. Jsem uplne k.o. a nechapu cim to. Vcera jsem byl totalne v pohode, dneska myslim,...

Nepál 2017

Apr 14, 2013 - Trekkers back at kathmandu

I had a long talk with Mary Clay last night. This is the first time I have spoken with any of the team since I left the mountain two weeks ago. Mary reports that the hike from Base Camp to Lukla was very difficult. The hike from Base Camp to Pheriche and from Pheriche to Namche were both long and cold. They were basically traveling twice as far each day on the way down than on the way up. But, after all of the trials and hardships, they are safely back in Kathmandu preparing to return home Tuesday. I asked Mary if she was glad she went on...

Apr 7, 2013 - Still no word from the front plus random notes and photos

Sunday afternoon, April 7, 4:30 PM EST Still not word from anyone on the mountain. I believe the schedule was for the guys to move to Everest Base Camp today, which means that either they are still at Loboche, have no cell or Internet signal at Everest Base Camp, or are just want to torture me. It is now early morning on the mountain, so it is unlikely we will get any word until sometime fairly early Monday morning, Kentucky time. I will keep you posted, but as the IMG website reports, no news is good news. The pictures I have posted are...

Apr 3, 2013 - Reports from the Front

As it is now 4:45AM on Wednesday in Kentucky, it is obvious that my internal clock is still considerably out of whack. I was semi productive part of the day on Tuesday , but then basically hut down about 2:00 PM (which, I think, is about 11:00 PM Nepal time) and went to bed. I made myself, with some help from Hannah, wake up about 6:00 PM, and then went back to bed at midnight, only to wake up a few minutes ago. I did get some scattered reports from the mountain over the course of the day. A part of the group, including Martin, Chris, and...

Apr 17, 2012 - Trekking in Nepal - Day 8,9,10,11

Norm & Grace if you are reading this it's for you. Everyone says hi and all of us miss you! It's been 4 days since my last update and so much to report. It is currently 4:45 pm on Tuesday April 16th and I am in the Rivendell Lodge in Debuche. It was quite a trek up to Gorak Shep. Everyone paid the price somewhat. Between Laboche and Gorak Shep Mary had a small melt down. We thought she might need some oxygen but after a little snack & some good drugs from Eoin she toughed it out and was feeling better by the time we got there. The trek was...

Nepal Trek 2012

Apr 13, 2012 - Trekking Day 7 - a rest day in Pheriche

Rest day in Pheriche. That means a small hike to a local lookout and that's it. It still took about 3 hours but the views were utterly incredible. 360 degree views of mountains and valleys that are almost impossible to describe. We loaded a bunch of them on Facebook today. today is a sad day for all of us. We are now down to 9 trekkers. Today Grace & norm flew out by helicopter around 12 noon. Grace had a gall bladder attack of some kind and was in a lot of pain. she made the 5 hour trek yesterday here. What a trooper. They visited a local...

Nepal Trek 2012

Apr 12, 2012 - Trekking Day 4,5,6

Day six and here we are in Pheroche at 4290 meters (14,157 feet). We left Namche 3 days ago and stayed at Khumjung, Pangboche, and now Pheroche. We got here about 1 pm today and will stay 2 nights. Tomorrow will be a rest day. We had our first view of Everest today. Not all of it. It was just the top poking out behind another range. We will have to wait for a couple more days yet to get better views. Our weather has been unsettled. Yesterday we had a bit of everything and for the first for Eoin in 17 treks he got rained on while trekking....

Nepal Trek 2012

Sep 27, 2011 - Pheriche

With the ring of the alarm, I open window curtain with a fear of seeing continuing of overnight snowfall, but to my utter relief I see absolutely clear blue skies. For the first time on this trek, the habit of checking weather first thing in the morning has yielded a positive result. This gets us all excited and we set out after a quick breakfast. The Czech guy, who was on his way up, decides to spend on more night at Dhukla because he is feeling the effects of altitude. As we step out of the hotel, we encounter a slush of snow, ice, and...

Everest Base Camp

Nov 2, 2010 - Pheriche

Joss and Rin went on their trek today so I had a pretty boring morning going to and fro from the tea house to the town, making excuses to buy soap and water, using the phone and the Internet. After, I sat outside reading in the sun trying to get some warmth.. it is so cold! About 2pm I saw Joss coming in the distance and he had some of our group with him! I was delighted to see them but slightly scared as they all looked terrible. Some had been up since 4am and trekked to Kala Pattar which is higher than base camp over 18,000ft. All there...

Nov 1, 2010 - Dingboche - Pheriche

As I looked out the window a blanket of snow covered Dingboche. It must have been about 6 inches deep. The sky was still grey and visibility was zero, I felt very worried I would have to stay an extra night here and to be honest I just wanted to get out of here. This place is tainted with illness and disappointment. We went for an early breakfast and our guide - Rin - thinks it will be fine to trek today... relief! We left peaceful lodge and entered a peaceful snow covered Dingboche. It was very quiet and most of the snow was untouched...

Apr 13, 2010 - Gorak Shep to Pheriche

Up at 3 a.m. and hiking by 4 a.m. Am I nuts? I had to at least give it a try. Most of the group were up for the hike up Kalar Pattar where you can get a great view of Everest. It snowed during the night and it was really cold. The trail was slippery too. I was slow and last in line. We were a line of headlamps. I couldn't warm up my hands or feet no matter how much I rubbed and stomped my feet. Memories of frostbite on Kilimanjaro came back, and I turned around. Later Andreas (Norway) vomited and also turned back. It took them 4 hours to...
