Nov 2, 2005 - Circuit Day 9 (The brink of the pass)
Leder (4200m) to Thorong Phedi (4500m) A processional walk - lots of people, one thin track in the snow. I got the inklings of an (altitude) headache a few times but thankfully it always quickly cleared. Maybe just the cold. Today marks the half way point for the trek and is also the last night before the pass. Will we make it over??Jump to full entry
Manang (3500m) to Khangsar Gompa (3920m) to Manang (3500m) A day to aclimitise to the altitude. The walk today was option, but everyone went because it is supposed to help with alclimitising to the altitude. It was tough going. Not because of the altitude, but because the track was mostly covered with snow and was slippery. Apparently this is what it could be loike from now on until over the pass. Nice. I went for the Yak Burger for dinner today. Not as chewy as the steak and quite nice. The village of Manang is in the middle of nowhere. No...Jump to full entry
Oct 29, 2005 - Circuit Day 5 (Snow and Tablets)
Chame (2700m) to Pisang (3200m) Joy and concern today. Joy because I finally got to use the Iodine water purification tablets I bought years ago for my first Round The World trip with Al. I was young, inexperienced and over-cautious then, believing the literature that such things were necessary. Concern because there was some snow at night....what was hapenning up ahead at the Pass?? A glimpse of Annapurna IV todayJump to full entry
Sep 12, 2005 - Annapurna - over and down.
High Camp is a strange place, a collection of stone-built buildings on a shelf at 4800m, run by two guys who want to play Karam all day. The menu is surprisingly extensive with costs to match, many people could have described my 'spaghetti bolognaise' as 'instant noodles in tomato sauce' but it was fairly tasty and nutritious and at this altitude you don't get maggots in your food (nor rats in the room). The Kiwis developed headaches earlier in the day so elected to spend the night down in Thorung Phedi leaving the Dutch and myself in High...Jump to full entry
