April 25, 2011 Day 16 GorakShep to Kala Patthar and then Pheriche 5556m to Kala Patthar - 4.5 hours Pheriche - 4240m Most of the people of the Yeti Resort got up at 4am so we were half awake long before our 5am alarm. At 5:20am Charlene and I had tea and then we left at 5:39am for Kala Patthar. It was about -10C or colder with the wind and lots of snow. Thankfully we had our microspikes on which really helped navigate the steep hill. It was a tough slog today but we made it in less than 2.5 hours at 8:03am. We took a lot of pictures and...

May 10, 2013 - Day 12 Lobuche to GorakShep

GorakShep 5180m 2.5 hours I had my best sleep from 5 – 7am and woke up with a start thinking I was late. We are meeting at 7:30 this morning, so I am good – whew! We left Lobuche at 8am and slowly made our way to GorakShep following the Khumbu glacier that tumbles down the valley. At the half way mark we got our first glimpse of the tents at Base Camp. We arrived and 10:30am or so and first order of the day – Ra Ra noodles and toast. The balance of the day is a rest day to catch up on sleep and acclimatize to the new altitude. Charles read...

Sep 18, 2012 - The Come Down

Wake-up call 4am! It was pitch black and woke with a stinking headache.
