Mariental, welch klingender Name. Na ja, nix Schoenes, aber viel weiter kamen wir nach 660 Tageskilometern nicht mehr. Der Umweg war absichtlich gewaehlt, um die kuerzeren lediglich 490 km Sandpisten zu vermeiden, da man dort allerhoechstens nur 80km/h fahren kann -bei guten Verhaeltnissen. Gegen Mittag passierten wir wohl eine der unspektakulaersten Hauptstaedte der Welt, Windhoek, nicht mal 1 Autobahnraststaette hatte es hier. Also ab in einen der Vorrorte zum Tanken und essen. Kaum waren wir drei wieder eingestiegen, wollte ich den Wagen...

Apr 30, 2010 - route dag 3b Windhoek - Mariental

Windhoek - Mariental (time 4,5 hours, distance 260 km) By noon we should be arriving at Mariental on the edge of the Kalahari desert. This desert stretches out to Botswana and is the home of the Bushman (Bosjesmannen). The desert has red sand and an occasional Quiver tree. In the afternoon a chauffeur will take us into the Kalahari desert in a 4WD to enjoy a real African Sundowner. Nov 26, 2006 - Hardap Game Park

So after walking through the desert in the afternoon to a place called Deadvlei with petrified trees and the such we drove to Hardap. This is next to Mariental which is the 8th most sunniest spot in the world (apparently!). We camped at the park where there was absolutley no one!! It was a bit eerie but that night we had a braai and finished off a wonderful Drostdy Hof goon sack!!! Yum yum! (mine and Antonias favourite!).
