Fish River Canyon, absolutely awe inspiring, 161 Km's long, 27 Km's wide at it's widest point, 550 metres deep, and approx 500 million years old, 2nd largest next to the Grand canyon, did 2 km hike around this and when we got back the guides had laid out a wicked spread of dried fruits,crackers, and South African cheeses, all to be washed down with SA vino and Champagne, magic. Stopped on side of road and competed in competition where you spit Springbok poop, believe it or not, and guess what, I won, New Zealand represent !! Crazy crazy...

Feb 17, 2005 - Hobas - Bethanie

We made a quick stop off at the Fish River Canyon after breakfast. The Fish River Canyon is second only to the Grand Canyon in length (160km) and depth (550m) width 27 km. We hit the road again and it started to pour as we approached the town of Bethanie. By the time we got into town, the main street was completely flooded. The water was more than ankle deep. One of the local kids did a 'Slip and Slide' demo for us in the middle of the street (he ran and slid down the street on his belly). It was funny to watch. Thankfully, JB, our driver,...
