Aug 2, 2008 - Lucca to Monte Carlo, Monaco

July 29/08 - Sue & Murray ran around the top of the Lucca wall. Relaxed by the pool at our villa. July 30/08 - Drove to Manarola, one of the towns in Cinque Terre, then took the ferry to a couple of the other towns (Monterosso and Riomaggiore) - beautiful towns built right onto the side of cliffs overlooking the ocean. Ironically, Susan's nephew, Jeffrey, who's travelling around Europe right now, was in Cinque Terre the same day as us, but we had no way of contacting him, so we never saw him - so close yet so far away! July 31/08 - Drove to...

Jul 27, 2008 - Sunday Brunch in Monaco

Sunday, July 27 - We took the train to Monaco today. It was a 20 minute ride to the Riviera's pastel Hong Kong and was well worth the trip. First we walked around the Palace grounds. No glimpses of the Grimaldi Clan but I did meet up with their founder the monk of Grimaldi. Tour groups were everywhere and the heat and humidity was getting to us so we found a nice restaurant in a small square by the cathedral with a refreshing fountain and ordered, what else, Italian food! During torrid hot spells in Europe we always find it cooling to duck...

Jun 1, 2008 - Monte Carlo, Monaco

Bon Jour! This morning we woke up and had not yet arrived at our next port of Monte Carlo, Monaco. We were able to eat a more leisurely breakfast as the ship dropped anchor just off shore. Today we looked forward to a half day trip to give us a minor break in the action. We just missed the rain (there was a 40% chance today) and the waters were choppy making the tender ride in an E-ticket ride. We started off traveling the Lower Cornish through Beaulieu, Nice and Cap d’Antibes. Since this was a shorter trip, we mostly just drove through...

Oct 25, 2007 - Monaco and Monte Carlo

Milan was a quick stopover and of course a good dose of Heineken. Not feeling too flash this morning but we decide to leave early to avoid the hassle of finding more parking tickets for the car. Had breakfast, charged the phone up at reception and ventured off to the south of France. The sights on this drive will last forever. I didn't realise but this area is actually in the mountains that fall down to the sea. The mountains are interceded by valleys, but the drive is up in the air above the ground over huge floyers punctuated by tunnels...

Great night sleep - comfortable queen size bed, soft sheets, feather pillows. Balcony cabin L247 - Star Princess - 13 bars, 9 restaurants - check it out on the web cam to see where we are. Lovely sunset last night and woke this morning to text messages and emails. Arrived 7am - woke to birthday balloons & a card outside my door. Went ashore in Monte Carlo, visited the Grand Palace, saw the changing of the guards and visited the Monte Carlo Yacht club. Wandered the shops - didnt buy a birthday present - it will happen. 6pm sail away. Dinner...

Jul 31, 2007 - Monte Carlo, Monaco

Hi all, finally have a decent keyboard. Well we left Uzes after a wonderful 6 days. Spent the next 24 hours on 4 trains. The first to Marseilles, then along the French Riviera to Nice. Really beautiful. We had time for a lovely meal at a sidewalk brasserie while watching the sights. Then the overnight train to Rome. Our sleeper was slightly larger than a shoe box. After a bit of juggling to store suitcases , we settled in. It was stocked with water, towels, tissues etc and had a bunk and handbasin and po! Luckily the loo wasn't too far down...

Europe 2007

Jul 31, 2007 - Nice to Monte Carlo, Monaco

Today we made our way to the principality of Monaco, the second smallest country in the world covering only approximately two square kilometres. We had been anticipating our stay here since the start of our trip as one of the places we most wanted to visit. We took the train from Nice and arrived in Monte Carlo at approximately 12:00 noon. The principality is situated on the side of a mountain and has been under the rule of the Grimaldi Family who took control of the area as a strategic point from which to defend themselves from would be...

Jul 11, 2007 - Monte Carlo, Monaco

Arrived in Monaco around 7am. We had a nice tour around the city. The language here is French. Highlights included the Royal Palace, Royal Casino and The Cathedral of Monte Carlo. This is a very interesting Principality. It is very small in area but many, many rich people live here. The Hotel Paris, which was built in 1863 to attrack people to the city, now costs 2500E/day. One Euro is equal to $1.49. That is for the cheapest room. An average apartment is 14000E/sq M/month. Obviously our social security would not allow us to live here. Most...

Jun 24, 2007 - Monte Carlo and bonjour from FRANCE

I am running out of entries on this site so will combine a couple here. One thing about cruising is that you go to sleep in one place and then you wake up the next morning in a completely different place. Yesterday morning's breakfast had a view of Monte Carlo! I selected whatever I wanted to eat from 1000 different options and then Judy and I took the tender boat into Monte Carlo. Judy was a tour escort for our tour to Eze, and I am happy to report I made it to FRANCE...wow. Eze was amazing. A midieval cliffside town. I will definitely...
