Nov 18, 2006 - Veracruz, Veracruz

We decided to only drive the 3 hours to Veracruze today as we are a head of schedule by 2 days ( not sure how ) and we are staying here for 2 days, it's a Best Western and i fear that if we drive on there will not be another decent place to stay before we get to Playa del carmen. Still have to stay one more night in Villahermosa before we get to Playa del carmen. Upon entering the city we were re routed by the police due to an accident and we found ourselves driving through some local market on the street, bumper to bumper traffic,...

Mexico For 3

Nov 17, 2006 - Costa Esmeralda? I'm only guessing

Took about a dozen wrong turns today, not sure were i stayed last night and it wasn't because i drank too much either. I have plotted on my map where i think i was but i was out of there at the crack of dawn. (again, geesh) The costal 180 has turned into a mexican village night mare. One wrong turn after another. We managed to stop in Tampico for some supplies at a huge all in one stop store. It was kinda neat, shopping with he locals, although we stick out like a sore thumb. The traffic is insane here and when you are following a map it's...

Jespers Gap Year

May 10, 2005 - Costa del Oil

Sunday 08.05.05 Finally feeling fit again, i caught the bus with Renee for Veracruz, a large town on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It was raining heavily as we passed Pico de Orizaba, Mexico's highest peak, but in Veracruz, it was a different story. Even after 10pm the heat and humidity suspended the stench of food waste, excrement and fish market leftovers in the air into an oppressive cocktail. Eating next to the zócalo (central park) amongst the locals was more pleasant thanks to giant fans moving the air about and street performers...

Mar 23, 2005 - Costa Esmeralda

Ah, the Emerald Coast! The bus ride was really beautiful, though we were a little preoccupied for a while watching the mile markers and wondering where we would have to disembark. This concern intensified when we flew past the hotel at which we had made reservations and kept on going down the road. So no, the hotel was not within walking distance from where we got off the bus. The Emerald Coast is a beautiful stretch of beach that lies along the coastal highway for about 30 kilometers. There is no town really. There are a bunch of small...

Mar 20, 2005 - Xalapan Whine

Xalapa was a short three hour jaunt from Puebla which really felt like cake after some of the bus rides we've had as of late. Like Puebla, the bus station is five to ten kilometers from the town center, so we had to catch a cab. This is such an agreeable experience here (since I often find catching cabs in cities I don't know to be incredibly annoying): they have a booth outside of the bus station that says "Taxis Controlados" where one says where one wants to go, pays and receives a ticket to hand to the driver. This removes that feeling...

Nov 7, 2004 - get set go

Get set Go: Well, it is finally D-day, whatever that means. I still have a few last minute things to do and then shift my focus to the trip. I catch the bus at 10am in the morning. You won't hear from me until I arrive in Papantla. So, this will be short. Remember you can check the itinerary by clicking on it and if you move the page to the far right you will see a spot to e-mail me and see the guest book. If you have anything to say I will get your message when I log in. See ya all later. Gay

Two months in Mexico

Jul 28, 2004 - Tuxpam, Mexico

Well, we are travelling farther than planned each day, mainly because we have no set places we want to visit, and now the final goal, is to get home. However, we are still enjoying our drives, and the towns we end up in. This time, its Tuxpam, another, untourist and lively Mexican town. We are intrigued to see how busy these cities are at night. At 10pm on the streets of Fullerton you would see a mostly deserted place, but the streets of Tuxpam are alive with all sorts of activity at this time of night. We hope to update one more time...

Jul 21, 2004 - aankomst in Veracruz
