Nov 30, 2015 - Cholula and Catemaco

Leaving San Miguel brought about a mixture of sadness about leaving such a beautiful city and excitement about what lies ahead. We have travelled for 9 days now and are finally in the heat ... and hot it is ... for us ... not for Mexicans. While we find the temperature of 30C, with high humidity to be stifling, they are still wearing long pants and sweaters. After all, it hits the high 30s in a few months. I am going to depart a bit from the style I've used for most of this journal. I've mostly skipped mileage, costs and highway...

Feb 14, 2009 - Tourist in a non-tourist town

Well, it has been another in a series of wonderful days here in Mexico. This was scheduled as a 'free day' in which to explore the area. After getting information from the campground owner - who is (or was) an American - a large group of us headed out this morning for some sightseeing. We carpooled about 15 miles back in the direction we came from and headed out to see a local waterfall. It was worth the drive and definately worth the climb down, and then back up the 260 stairs. After doing a litte shopping we made a stop at the local...

Jan 24, 2009 - Catemaco

We stopped in this town of witchcraft for a couple of days. There is a church here that Mexican people come to be blessed and healed. The big tourist item is a booming business of taking small (12 people) boat trips out to Monkey Island and seeing and feeding the “FAT” monkey’s. We also enjoyed a heartily participated in “Margarita Party”.

Dec 2, 2008 - Lake Catemaco, Mexico

Tuesday December 2…10:0pm We woke up to rain dropping on the roof. It rained steadily while we got ready to go, and didn’t let up until mid-morning. We were on the road by 8:30am, having waited a bit in the hope that traffic will have lightened up by the time we got to the bypass around Veracruz. And the traffic was no problem. The bypass toll road is being worked on though, so it was a bit slow going. We have been a bit concerned about directions in getting around both Tampico and Veracruz because the guide books we have make it out to be...

We have had a smooth and fun journey so far and we'll be here 5 days to a week so I'll have time to update this journal with all our news, and we'll be phoning family. Now we're off on the moped down to the lake for a shrimp cocktail!

Sep 9, 2007 - Costa Esmereldas / Catemaco

From San Miguel we travelled over a range rising sharply to 9500 feet. At the summit we should have seen an almost neverending series of valleys but instead just a very dense cloud cover which made even seeing the bike in front a joy. A number of loose donkeys also added to the fun. Over the range and toward the Caribbean (Costa Esmereldas) the weather turned decidedly sticky - very lush but very humid. Spent some time on the coast very fortunately actually as only a week ago a tornado descended pretty much destroying the place. Dank pools...
