We left Friday morning for an overnight to Mazatlan arriving there about tenish Saturday morning. ... Mazatlan…… After the 12 hour day and drive down the Devil's Spine, we decided to spend an extra day in Mazatlan. ... So, on our last night in Mazatlan, we spent it with cousin Joe and watched the surf splashing the shore as it was lit up by the moon and listened to music performed at the hotel's bandstand. ... We left Mazatlan early in the morning and decided that we would blast through to Hermosillo rather than endure another night in Los Mochis (our worst hotel by far). ...

The Mexican way . we pull on to a one way road circling a brand new, mostly dead, resort (that is to say, it had more workers than tourists which, unfortunately, seems to be the way everywhere we look and travel these days) to kill a few hours while we wait for the ferry from La Paz heading to Mazatlan, on the mainland. ... From La Paz we went 230+ nautical miles across the Sea of Cortez to Mazatlan. ... By 7:30 Monday morning we found ourselves with no wind requiring us to motor the remaining 85+ miles to Mazatlan. ... Fortunately we had some good guides and charts that enabled us to navigate the reefs and find the jetty entrance to Mazatlan harbor. ... We slept a lot on Tuesday only walking into old Mazatlan for an hour or so to visit the public market, grab a taco and see the old cathedral. ... Today we did a lot more exploring around old town checking out the plaza Machado, the crescent shaped Playa Olas Altas where tourism first flourished in the 50s, took a picture of Playa Norte where the new resort Mazatlan is located, picture of Isla Venados (we passed on way in), and even a cliff diver. ...

Mazatlan is about 500 km from El Fuerte so we planned on going about half way today then reaching Mazatlan tomorrow. ... We proceeded through the city dogging traffic and trying to stay on track towards Mazatlan while also trying to spot a regular motel or hotel. ... Nearly $20USD to travel about 150km! We tried a couple of times to find hotels between Culiacan and Mazatlan but had no luck so we ended up pulling into Mazatlan just before sundown, hot, tired and ready to grab the first room we could find, almost. ... We saw a lot of varied scenery, had a little off road riding in the construction zones and villages and best of all, it was not quite as hot today, even though we crossed the tropic of Cancer just before reaching Mazatlan. ... Tomorrow we will look for a more reasonable hotel and hopefully spend at least a few days here in Mazatlan. ...
