Jan 24, 2010 - COAST TO COAST

Having travelled the width of Mexico from the most eastern southerly point on the pacific coast, we eventually arrived on the Caribbean coast is some dreadful place called Playa Del Carmen, which I suppose is the Mexican version of something like the Costa Del Sol! Certainly no Mexicans were on holiday there, mainly just fat Americans and plenty of fake boobs. Oh and the obligatory Wal Mart and Starbucks in order to feed the fat Americans. The actual beach there, although it did have white sand and turquoise water, was really just a...

Jan 16, 2010 - Ron & Angie!!

Ron & Angie!!!!! After waiting for what seemed like forever, we were finally in a rented car and on our way to Cancún to pick up Ron and Angie. Yippee! It’s nice to be on the road, but it’s really nice to be with family, especially those two. The four of us always seem to have way too much fun when we are together. We were excited like two kids in a candy store! After a slight delay with customs......the airline didn’t have the correct forms on board to fill out in advance, they came through the doors. They were more prepared than some of...

Jan 3, 2010 - Playa del Carmen

Hotel Alux- (www.hotelalux.com) We loved this place. 600 pesos, lots of hot water, wifi, walking distance to everything, far enough from the action that you can sleep at night, wonderful owners, Highly Recommend this hotel! Playa del Carmen We pulled out of Progreso late, tired, and perhaps a little bit thirsty. Thank you again, Ray & Sherry, we had a wonderful time, and would do it exactly same way again, given the chance. We were on our way to Playa del Carmen, some 5 hours away. I had a 2 week Spanish course booked, and then Barbie’s...

Feb 13, 2009 - Tulum to Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico

We started the day with a long walk on the beach. The high prices and non-existent service seem to be minor annoyances once you turn your back on them and look at the gorgeous Caribbean. This really is a paradise. After our walk we loaded the bike and headed towards Playa del Carmen. It is a high volume, high priced tourist area but much larger than Tulum so presumably more options would be available. We flipped through a Lonely Planet guide in the restaurant at breakfast and it looked like there may be some relative bargains to be...

Feb 7, 2009 - Home again

What a great vacation. Direct flight down, no major incidents the whole time, lots of laughter, lots of sun, no burns, lots of time with good friends. Can't ask for better than that. When we got home there was no snow to clear off the cars and it was record high temperatures. We took the easy way on this trip - no postcards (sorry), no souvenirs. It was a little bit of relaxing paradise in the middle of a wicked winter.

Feb 6, 2009 - A second night at AJUA

We traveled into Playa again to go to AJUA. What a great restaurant. The staff are friendly, attentive and entertaining. OMG, I can't believe that is all he wrote about AJUA, pronounces AAAWHHHOOOAAAA. It is what you are yellng by the time you leave the restaurant. It was the most fun we've ever had at a restaurant. The waiters deliver all drinks on their heads, including bottles of wine. The smoking section is upstairs, and they walk up the stairs with the drinks on their head. The real cesaer salad was made at the table, as was about...

Jan 31, 2009 - We arrive!

Mary and Mike came in to Toronto last night because we had to get up at stupid o'clock - it started with a 3!! Our flight didn't leave until 5:30, but even though we had business class and thus express check in, we thought we should be there by 4am for an international flight. Lucky Mike is uptight about timing, because we ended up getting to the airport at 3:40 am, and it was a zoo! The line up for security was half way down terminal 3. Yikes. We made it to the gate as they were boarding, which we figured was perfect timing. No...

Jan 30, 2009 - Preparing for trip to Mexico

Today we make our last minute preperation for a short trip to Mexico. Our dive gear is packed in one bag, and our clothes in another. It always seems like we are traveling for a month when we go with our gear. Our plan is to spend the first day chilling and discovering the area. On Sunday we have a guided tour of Mayan ruins. The Monday we will go find a dive shop, we have several that we have already contacted for the trip. We plan to spend three days diving, 1 day on the coastal reef, 1 day at the cenote. The thirday day will be open to...

Jan 1, 2009 - Happy New Year from Sacbe

Thursday January 1…9:30pm Happy New Year! Whiskey let us sleep in for a bit, and we didn’t get up until 7:45. We filled up our fresh water from a hose at Carmen’s place, and said our goodbye’s. It was fun staying with somebody who actually lives in Cancun, and away from the hotel and tourist area. Thanks Carmen! We then travelled through the hotel zone and further south towards Playa Del Carmen. Not much traffic on the road, because it was still fairly early and it was a holiday. We were looking for possible beach parking spots, but this...

Aug 8, 2008 - Paa Mul!

After an easy, all toll-road day we arrived at 3:30pm this afternoon. Set-up and within 2 hours Dylan was playing in the dirt and racing bicycles with Luke and Jake, two boys who live across the street, while Thomas and I were chatting and drinking beer with their Mum, Veronica, who we know from last time we were here. Lots of new palapas; we are in the site next door to the one we had before, so the same neighbourhood! All is good. My favorite moment of the drive today... when we passed through a toll-booth on the Merida-Cancun toll road...

Jul 31, 2008 - San Pedro Belize and Playa del Carmen Mexico

Reluctantly we had to drag ourselves away from Caye Caulker. A 30 minute water taxi ride took us to the island of Ambergris Caye and the town of San Pedro (possibly the inspiration for the Madonna song La Isla Bonita?). Much more developed and commercial than Caye Caulker with large hotels and resort complexes and a lot of traffic. The following day we travelled into Mexico following a 2 hour water taxi ride to Corozal and the border. We ended up at Playa del Carmen, a brash resort (but with a great beach) with the usual tourist trappings...
