Jun 19, 2011 - Playa del Carmen and Tulum

When I first came to Playa del Carmen I certainly felt that this city was quite different then all of the other cities that I have seen to date in Mexico. This is a tourist town as a large portion of the town seems geared towards tourism. Also, many places sell things in both pesos and USD and almost everyone seems to know English which is different from most places in Mexico. I've spent a few days here now and I can certainly understand why so many people visit Playa. It is very scenic and has many types of activities for all types of...

Unfortunately....this trip will not contain names as friendships have dissolved. Either way, I will share the trip because I honestly had a blast!! Caught the biggest Bull (Dorado) that I have ever seen (and most everyone else confirmed its 5+ feet length!!! as the biggest!!)....Drank Chilladas (beer and tomato juice with lime) on the boat trip....had the...

Jan 27, 2011 - Eyes of the World

You wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world-Grateful Dead Wow, what a great couple of days we've had already. The ruin tours were lifetime events but we are, well, RUINED today! Nervously climbing over uneven ground for two days has clearly taken a heavy toll on us both. We are seriously getting old and today officially confirms that obvious fact. Whatever. Well, whoever planned this trip was thinking ahead because today was slated for recovery. But heck it might take two days to feel completely right again. Through Trip...

Jan 26, 2011 - Playa del Carmen

The 23rd we arrived in Playa del Carmen - known for being a party town. We got in and wandered around for about 30 minutes trying to find our hostel (of course it was two doors further down the first street we had walked down)...we went for a walk down the beach and down Quinta Ave before heading back to our hostel and meeting a couple of Americans who we ended up hanging out with for the next three days. After dinner we walked back down Quinta Ave and watched a fire show and some of the street artists before venturing to Walmart - yes, we...

Jan 24, 2011 - Tequila Sunrise

In short, this place is worth the ride! After another long day of travel we arrived safely at hotel Playa Maya yesterday evening. After check-in, we cruised the famous 5th avenue for some sightseeing. Just Wow. The colors, the lights, the music, the wonderful smell of great food. What a funky vibe! La Quinta Avenida is a bustling marketplace. Shop hawkers all have a unique catch line to attract you into their stores. Hola, best prices in Mexico, we make a deal, Free plastic bag with your purchase! We ate at an Argentinian steak house for...

Dec 23, 2010 - Mayan Riveria, Mexico

We wanted to try a Christmas retreat. The trip booked was originally to Jamaica but, the carrier cancelled the flight 1 month prior to departure and the only resort left in that price range was the family resort Occidental Grand X-Caret. A sprawling resort with okay protected snorkeling. We loved the man made lagoon and that there was an adult's only area in front of the buffet and if you are an animal lover there are plenty here! Loved the parrots in the hotel lobby and the giant Christmas tree. We met a great family while we were there...

Living the Dream

Sep 30, 2010 - Play Del Carmen

Have arrived in Playa del Carmen where I am to meet the GVI people. The trip from Cancun to Playa was as simple as buying a ticket from a girl in front of the bus at the airport. Playa looks and behaves like the touristy bits of the Gold Coast (will add photos later) and the weather is very, very, humid and about 27-28 degrees. Being a touristy area I found a place that serves vegan food, enjoying a very filling soya bean burger and fresh juice in nice surroundings at "100% natural"; I think it is U.S. owned. Cost me about $10 for the...

May 30, 2010 - Underwater

Apr 19, 2010 - Head to the airport for the trip home.

Morning started out good. Slept in, had a shave and a shower, nice breakfast. Came back to my room, packed and was at reception by 10:45 to check out. Not rushing at all, after all, It's a beautiful morning. Got to the airport, checked in, cleared security...except no liquids or gels of any kind on your carry on...including toothpaste. That kinda sucked. They didn't even want to look into my bag. Had lunch, got to my gate with an hour to spare. Watched my bag load onto the plane with all the others. 15 min to gate call...All our bags come...

Apr 17, 2010 - Day 15 Depart Playa del Carmen

Well, my resort's website says it is 10 min north of Playa del Carmen. Oddly, it took me just over 3 hours to get there. I went to the shuttle vans, paid my 20 pesos for a trip to Sandos. Driver assured me he knew where I was going. I was looking for signs, but I was in the back of the van and couldnt see much. Turns out I end up in Cancun 45 min later. Another 30 Pesos for a ride in a diferent van to get to Sandos. I saw the sign this time...diver didn't...Back to my starting point in Playa. 20 pesos again for my 3rd van, this time I...

Apr 1, 2010 - Playa del Carmen

On our way to Tulum we stopped off at Playa del Carmen for the day. The beach was beautiful there, the hotels weren’t as imposing and the whole place had a much nicer feel to it than Cancun. You can also see the island Cozumel in the distance and the ferries going back and forth. Going out in the evening was amazing, free entry for girls and open bar all night, we managed to go the whole night without spending a peso! Would love to come back here for another visit… one day definitely wasn’t enough.
