Dec 3, 2017 - Xcaret

We have several activities lined up for the week but today was all about exploring Xcaret. The resort is quite extensive and, with all the lush foliage, it is pretty easy to get lost. We did. Much to Jim's delight, there is wildlife on the property. The iguana really blend in with the background despite the fact that, snout to tail, their length can reach 72". We have not seen any quite that large yet but, since they hide so well, we could have walked right past them. The coatimundi or coati are not nearly as shy. As we were walking a...

Dec 2, 2017 - International travelers

We have travelled extensively in the United States, having been to all the states a couple of times and many states numerous times. Our journeys outside of the US have been limited in comparison. We have now expanded our itinerary. We will be spending a week in Playa del Carmen, Mexico - between Cancun and Cozumel. We is Sandi's sister Barb, her husband Jim, Sandi's brother Terry, his friend Cindy and, of course, Jim and Sandi. The resort, arranged by Terry, is absolutely stunning, although we were all seeing it through bleary eyes. We all...

Apr 5, 2016 - Playa del Carmen y Los Ruinas

Playa del Carmen After some initial confusion at the airport I connected with my two Australian companions and picked up our rental car from Edgar, the ISIS representative (an unfortunate name for a rental car company, I admit) and headed South from Cancun to Playa del Carmen. Our lodging was inside the gated community of Playamor - not exactly my usual stomping ground. Clearly there is a lot of wealth here. Playa has grown from a laid back beach town to a fairly glitzy resort area. The last of the Spring Break crowd were still around but...

Feb 9, 2016 - finishing off in style!

Our days in Playa del Carmen have been spent wandering, as we always do, with the added fun of looking for accommodation for one night. In all our previous trips to wherever we have ventured we have been lucky, I suppose, in finding good places to stay (for the most part!). The Yucatan seems to be the exception to this rule as the places have been fine but several times we have not been able to extend our stay beyond a night or two. So if we like the town we have to hit the streets to find another hostel or motel. This has been the case in...

Sep 23, 2015 - Day 10 of Rachel's trip....

Day 10 - we pulled into Palenque at about 7am for a quick restroom stop and a chance for us to congratulate each other on surviving the night!! After that the American man told us we had had a police escort the whole night because the road is sooo dangerous- eeeeek - well we survived - phew!! Rachel and I had also throughout the night caught a wife of a bad smell (I mean a really bad smell) and had gone through all our bags and checked our shoes to no avail - at Palenque we discovered the source - the lady behind us, it was so bad I have no...

Mar 7, 2015 - Playa del Carmen

Saturday 2/7 It was a very early morning to be ready to leave Merida at 6:30 am. It was a very good decision on our guide’s part, though. We got to Chichen Itza about the time they opened at 8:00. It was warm already, but nothing like it would be later in the day. There were only a few other vehicles in the parking lot. Because of it’s location, it is a big draw for tours like ours, as well as day tours from Cancun and cruise ships. The site is magnificent, and much more developed for tourists than the others we have seen. It is also quite...

Travels in Mexico

May 10, 2014 - Arrived in Mexico - The start of our journey in Central America

We've arrived in Mexico! We flew into Cancun airport on Tuesday 6th May and spent our first night in an airport hotel. We had a little trouble adjusting to the time difference but had expected some disruption due to the distance we travelled over the last couple of days and our crossing of the international date line. On Wednesday morning we took a taxi down the coast to Playa Del Carmen where we will be based until we meet with our organised trip on Saturday. We settled into our lovely little hotel. We were allowed to select our own room...

Mar 8, 2014 - Playa del Carmen

Lazy day today with a late breakfast that was a mix of western and mexican. Even the scramble eggs had frijoles (fried blackbeans) on the side. The coffee was good and strong, but I think Vicki will be struggling to find a decent cup of tea around here - lucky she has a stash of her own. So after brekky we strolled down to the beach which is only two blocks from our hotel, and spent most of the day there. The sand was good - just not very wide. The water was cool with no real waves. In the evening met the rest of the group we are...

Jan 5, 2014 - A day with Ernestio and more!

Got up at 6:30 and did all the morning stuff, then headed off to meet up with Ernesto. Needed to get some bandages first for my feet – I had worn some blisters and raw spots from not being used to sandals. Anyway, got quite lost and wandered around for a while asking people how to get the the meeting place (a laundry). Got to the meet at 8:00 - exactly a half hour late. Met up with Ernesto, his wife (whose name I can’t remember), and their four year old daughter Isabella. We headed out of town in a heavy rain storm – but were greeted by a...
